Gumira Agroforestry Project

The project is in Chigumira village of ward 22 in Chipinge District.The site of the project is 220km from Mutare and only 400m from the Save river.The broad goals are to help curb extensive siltaton of the save micro catchment and to enhance the protection of intwernational waters.The other goal is to promote biodiversity through the introduction of self sustainable activities like friut farming, market gardening, sugarcane plantation and the vertiva grass nurseries.

Objectives
-make the project a major focal point from which the community can learn ways of protecting and managing resources through growing of vertiva grass and proper ways of market gardening and fruit farming
-to generate some income for funding of school activities and projects
-impart some practical knowledge and skills to pupils and community members of conservation measures, income generating projects.
-to provide friuts for under norished children in the community
-create some form of employment to the members of the project group who shall implement project activities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Community members are working hand in hand with the school pupils and teachers to implement the project. The school committee together with the community came up with the idea of implementing this project after realising the environmental degradation of Save Catchment Area. Each household contributed in terms of labour and cash towards planned activities.

Gender Focus

Not much attention was paid on gender consideration since the project targeted all families wih children and pupils attending Gumira Primary School.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The community has become aware of how the project would serve as a measure to curb environmental degradation of Save Catchment and was also a bid to rejuvinate the flow of this significant international river.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The community have contributed in kind in terms of their labour and the area to establish the agro-forestry garden. They also got assistance in the area of sustainable agriculture and the programme was funded by Fos Belgium

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The group has put in place environmentally friendly market gardening activities which include sugar-cane production, fruit tree growing and vegetable production. The agricultura produce is both for meeting their food requirements and for sale.

Capacity - Building Component

The project was a platform for both the community and the school to learn ways of protecting and managing resources through agroforestry approaches and planting vertiva grass in water ways. The project equipped the local community with knowledge and skills of combating environmental degradation of the Save River (international river). ;'/;

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project was the brainchild of both the local community and the school. They have been actively involved in project design and implementation and in identifying the fruit trees and vegetables to grow. For the school children there has been a high level of participation as it has been a window of employment given the high levels of unemployment.

Project Results

The major activity was the establishment of the orchard and the garden for horticultural activities. The orchard continues to produce but was greatly disturbed by cyclone Eline in 2000. The small grain and small livestock programme has greatly improved livelihoods in the area.
