Community afforestation and environmental management project

This project aims to enhance the skills of communities in the Central River Region to address and take steps to reverse trends in the decline of their environment. The project specifically seeks to combat the problem of deforestation and forest resources degradation by establishing woodlots and orchards and undertaking tree planting in the project communities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A sensitization workshop on deforestation effects was carried out in the five beneficiary communities and attended by 50 people from the communities. A 2 day training on environmental management was also held and was attended by 20 people from the beneficiary communities.

Project sustainability

Although the funding for the project is only for 12 months, it is expected to continue well beyond that period. The fruit tree orchards and woodlots will be taken care at the end of GEF funding as the impacts will be realised in the medium and long term.

Gender Focus

Both men and women participated in the project implementation but women slightly outnumbered the men. The women took charge and responsibility for collecting water needed for the tree planting.

Planning non gef grant

Once the project outcomes are favourable,it can serve as a model for up scaling through the use of non -GEF grants such as CILLS, FAO, WFP and other development partners and donors

Notable Community Participation

The members of the five beneficiary communities actively participated in the project planning and the members took ownership by identifying the sites for project implementation. The communities also set up working committees responsible for taking the lead in mobilizing the community participation during implementation. The communities also provided the land for the project .

Replication of project activities

The project will also be expected to serve as models for replication by other communities with similar backgrounds and issues once the outcomes are favourable.

Policy Influence

The project will be in support of both the national and local government policy objectives of combating land degradation and desertification through reafforestation of degraded lands in rural communities. The project will also be in support of the policy of alleviating rural poverty by improving the livelihoods through sustainable resources management.

Project Results

-one day sensitization workshop held for 50 people from five identified communities; four of which were eventual selected as the project beneficiaries.

-2- day refresher training session on forest management held for the project staff.

-2- day training on environment management technique and group management held for 20 members from the four beneficiary communities.

- fencing materials for 2 orchards purchased and distributed to beneficiary communities.

- 1,204 seedlings of forest trees and fruit trees raised at a central nursery to be eventually transplanted to orchards and woodlots.

- 2 orchards established in the villages of Alpha Sana and Kerr Maila both in Lower Saloum District, Central River Region. 303 seedlings of various assortment of trees were planted in Alpha Sana and 150 seedlings planted in Kerr Maila.

- 2 woodlots established in the 2 villages of Njame Ablie Leigh and jareng Ali Fati all located in Upper Saloum District of the Central River Region.150 tree seedlings were planted in each of the 2 villages.

- 298 persons (163 women and 135 men) wee trained on environmental and natural resources management. In each of the 4 project villages, local management committees were set up to ensure the success and sustainable management of the SGP project.
