Apiculture Sub-Sector Research and Development Strategy
Planned Activities (Main), Timeframe, Expected Results & Indicators
Overall Objectives:
1. Establishment of a National Stock of Queen Bees and Nucleuses, maintained at levels determined jointly by National Stakeholders, within the first year of project implementation.
2. Research and consultative process towards the establishment of a Dominican Beekeepers College for the facilitation of training, capacity building and National Certification Programs (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Specialized, Online Modules) within the first year of project implementation.
3. Enhance the capacity of Agricultural Extension Officers to coordinate an efficient and responsive Beekeepers Extension Program after one and a half (1 1/2) years of project implementation.
4. Formalize and launch the "Young Beekeepers Movement" founded by the Hon. Gloria Shillingford Minister for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs, within the first six months of project implementation. This program shall build on partnerships established with organizations including; 4-H Clubs, Girl Guides, Scout Troupes, Environmental Clubs etc, to train, certify and empower a cadre of young Beekeepers. Members of the movement will be issued certificates of membership and an official members neckerchief.
5. Research and consultative process towards the development and implementation of a National Apiculture Development Strategy/Program to guide the advancement of this Sub-Sector from 2014-2017.
6. Research and provision of technical as well as financial support for; Capacity Building & Micro Financing for Beekeeping Associations/Beekeepers, Biodiversity Conservation Programs, National Programs for the local production of Beekeeping Equipment (Particular focus will be placed on basic hive components such as; Bottom Boards, Telescoping Covers, Deep Supers, Shallow Supers).

20 Certified Basic and 10 Intermediate Beekeeping Graduates annually.
Activity 3
Beekeeping extension services from the Department Of Agriculture (DOA)
1 1/2 Years
Increased skill set for Extension Officers of the DOA, translating into more effective assistance to Beekeepers across the island. Mechanisms for the monitoring and assessment of national production standards.
A minimum of two training workshops annually for extension officers responsible for Apiculture activities. So as to increase the output of such workshops, a minimum of 10 Beekeepers shall also be invited to participate.

"Young Beekeepers Movement" founded by the Hon. Gloria Shillingford Minister for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs

Vibrant cadre of youth, trained and certified in Beekeeping techniques and educated on the importance of bees and other pollinators within the context of National Biodiversity Conservation.
Training of a maximum of 300 persons under the age of 25 in basic beekeeping techniques annually.
An annual Calendar of events for the members of the Young Beekeepers Movement. Design and issuing of neckerchiefs to members.

National Program for the local production of Beekeeping Equipment

Production of beekeeping equipment within Dominica, meeting international standards of; quality, labeling and packaging etc.

Implementation of a minimum of five (5) activities aiming to increase capacity to protect biodiversity including a program of events in observance of the IBD.

Consultative process geared towards the development of concept papers, project documents and action plans for implementation of Phase 2 of the Project. The objectives and activities of Phase 2 will be based upon the contents of the National Apiculture Development Strategy/Program.
Transparency and participatory approach to the development of Phase 2. Apiculture Sub-Sector Research & Development Strategy (Phase 2) Concept Paper, Project Document and Action Plan.
