"Mmera mpoyamba" (early action) green initiative, Balaka district
Balaka district is one of the areas mostly affected by climate change.Environmental management in this district is made difficult beacause of the following issues;economic livelihood-most people rely on natural resources exploitation for their survival and this exerts alot of pressure on all the natural resources resulting in land degradation which eventually results into soil erosion and infertility.Poverty levels in the district have led people in selling charcoal and wood thus high levels of deforestation.
The primary objective of the project is to support the conservation and enhancement of carbon stocks through sustainable management and climate proofing of land use, land use change and forestry.
Project Outcomes:
-Reduced green house gases as the project will promote the use of chitetezo improved cooking stoves.
-Increased income generation
-Increased land under forest areas due to increased number os trees and bamboos planted.
-Local business development
Sustainability of results:
-Training of community members e.g stove manufacturesrs will be trained on how to generate income from the stoves
-Village banking will be encouraged.
