PROMOTING CULTIVATION OF INDIGENOUS CROPS AND IMPROVED COFFEE TREES FOR ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION AND POVERTY REDUCTION IN KYALA VILLAGE, MOSHI RURAL, KILIMANJARO REGION;
CONTEXT:

In 2006 COMPACT project supported a project on cultivation of indigenous crops in Marangu Ward. This idea has been captured by other CBO after realizing the benefits other groups are getting in selling the crops. Kyala village is also looking for fund to establish a nursery to promote the cultivation of the same crops on their village The village will also plat trees along river MUE which support a number of farms down in the lower part of Moshi . This project is also intending to promote improve coffee cultivation in the area since there are no improved coffee tree nursery in their area.




PROJECT PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

? The project objective is to plant indigenous food crops which are disappearing due to lack of replanting
? To establish improved coffee nursery in order to improve coffee production

SECONDARY OBJECTIVE:

? To Increase tree planting and protection of Mue river.
? To increase community income from coffee and from traditional crops.

PROJECT BENEFITS:

? The project will increase land productivity since many Kihamba a producing very little in community income.
? The Project will reduce poverty in the village
? The project will increase tree planting activities among the community farms
? The project will result in conservation of Mue river

PROJECT ACTIVITY:

? Establishment of a nursery for indigenous crops
? Establishment of improved coffee tree nursery
? Planting trees on Mue river
? Planting indigenous crops in group members plots(Kihamba)
? Training on cultivation of improved coffee trees

EVALUATION INDICATORS:

? The project will have 10 farmers as demonstration farmers in cultivation of indigenous crops.
? Cultivation of five indigenous crops which are Nduu, Viazri Vikuu, Kweme, Nyanya Mshumaa and Magimbi
? Establishment of a indigenous crops nursery
? Establishment of improved coffee nursery

FOLLOW UP MECHANISM:

? The follow up mechanism will be carried out by the village leaders as they will also participate in the project. The will contact TACRI for training and demonstration in the establishment of improved coffee nursery
? The Group will make follow up on tree planting on Mue river and on planting indigenous crops
? The group will be reporting to the village authorities on all activities and to COMPACT project

SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROJECT:

The group will be selling indigenous food crops to the market in a whole sale and also will be selling the improved coffee seedlings this will help the group to continue with its activities.

Planting of indigenous crops contributes in biodiversity conservation and provides source of food of other animal species. for traditional crops in Kilimanjaro especially tree tomatoes provided source of food to bats, small mammals and variety of birds.
