Project Communication / visibility
1. On30 Jan 13 : Nonthan Tambol Administrative Organization, Chumphae District, Khonkaen Province, visited pilot community on conservation of natural resource and the environment.
2. On 21 Feb 13: Staff members of EU project visited pilot community on protection of water quality in Mae Kuang River and conservation of fishes.
3. On 28 Feb 13: Thung Sadao Tambol Municipality, Plaengyao District, Cha Choeng Sao Provincevisited the project to study approach and practice on sustainable community conservation of natural resources and the environment.
4. On 5 Mar 13: Master Degree on Fishery Technology and Water Resources Candidates , Mae Jo University,Chiangmai visited the project to study approaches on applying community knowledge for sustainable management and conservation of natural resources and the environment.
Emerging issues/ problems and approaches for solution
1. Participation was rather limited if meeting/training activities were organized on working days
2. Majority of working-age community members paid less attention to conservation work
Solution:
1. Capacity-building activities were conducted in weekends , especially on Sunday, since some members worked on Saturday.
2. Project leaders invited younger and older generation who did show keen interest in the project to participate. Using diverse activities appealing to these two groups seemed to work well- bird watching, water insects and landraces survey. Generally, children were fairly efficient in communicate the activities with parent several of whom later began to look at the project and participate.
Experience & lessons Learnt
Since the project was a result of cooperation of rural /suburban community in three Tambols, traditional harmonious ways of life had contributed to a fairly smooth implementation. This way of life was rather difficult to find in the region, especially in Chiangmai which had become cosmopolitan with its expanding urbanization and real estate project. This trends began to affect community participation in community development work. So, project leaders had to resort to public relation and a more public inspiring methods to cope with the issue.
Project Expense
The project reported the expense of THB:222,400 out of the first disbursement of THB: 257,395.92.

II. Monitoring Visit ( 26 July 2013)
Findings & Observation
At a small meeting place at a bank of Mae Kuang River in Baan (village) Thathoum, one of the two participating villages, the visiting team witnessed carried out activities through posters, photos and documents. Riding in a small boat along the river for about 400 meters up and down, it was observed that native plants along the river appeared intact, with native birds flying here and there, even though an alien species ?sherry shell? was spotted at a few locations.

About two-hour interacting with a group of project members gave a sense of optimal project participatory process. Continuous community effort and harmonious way of life had resulted in both public and private supporting roles making community development fairly successful. Major relevant public agencies that had been working with the project were the Sanphranate and Sanpuloei Tambol Municipality, Chiangmai Provincial Fishery Office, the Regional Office of Environment 1 in Chiangmai and Mae Jo University?s Faculty of Fishery in Chingmai. A participation from the faculty was witnessed by the presence of the dean, one staff member and two candidates of master degree programme on fishery, also visiting the project and sharing experience with the communities/visiting team. The participation would led to further technical assistance to conserve and plan sustainable use of fresh water biodiversity.

One main activity that had been completed was resources inventories. The project had launched this activities through participatory process where the project THA-SGP-OP5-STAR-IW-12-01/ Building Youth and Community Capacity in Krajae River of the same grant cycle contributed a resources person; youth group in project location led the surveying/inventorying roles; and community elders made the process and documentation whole. Other successful activity seemed to be a well overseen of the 2.5-km long of the fish conservation zone. It was confirmed that communities residing along both sides of the river strictly observed the regulations for river protection.

There was, however, one main issue that the project planned to address. This involved reaching out to adjacent upstream villages to adopt or participate in protection of the river. Project leaders seemed confident that forthcoming positive results of project in conjunction with additional reaching out effort would convince these villagers in the near future.

Results and indicators:
1. Increase capacity of targeted population witnessed by ability to compile data & information on biodiversity of fresh water ecosystems to be referred for planning their sustainable use, and to put into practical daily use of some species
2. The river ecosystems and water quality being upgraded witnessed by established parameters and thriving of at least 7 threatened fresh water fish species ( BOD at three locations = BOD 0.24, 3.38 and 3.98 mg/l confirming moderate quality of the river )
3. Some project members ( about 65 ) initiating adaptation of agricultural practice - changing from chemical intensive to less chemical and more organic ones.

In addition to the previous communication, the project was made more visible and understood through 4 visits from public agencies and university.

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:

The emerging committee of the project submitted proposal to sustain the project from Sanphranate Tambol Municipality since 2010 and had been awarded THB: 30,000 yearly. This amount was used in rehabilitation of the river, such as improving the scenery, getting rid of hyacinth, producing ionic plasma and planting species with pollutant-absorbing capacity (Canna indica L. or Indian shot) and training community members.
