Project Results
I. Progress Report ( June 25, 2013)
Activities Undertaken
1.Launching capacity building of targeted population including youth group
2. Launching demonstration of conservation activities through building habitats and demarcating conservation zones
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation
Result Produced
1.Acquired diving skill of seven members of youth group with international standard certificate ? the skill to be used in conservation and rehabilitation of coastal and marine resources . At least 60 households would benefit from this.
2. Increased awareness and capacity of at least 25 community members witnessed by sharing creative thoughts and idea on results to be achieved from project activities
3.Increase of young blue swimming crabs (30-40 %) being found in surrounding area
4.An area of 500m by 500m being demarcated as a conservation/rehabilitation area and a reminder to fishers
5.Reduced damage upon area behind the buffer zone thus community fishing gears
Project Communication and Visibility
In additiona to visitation from individual and group, the chairperson of Dolphin Conservation Group from Tambol Laemklad visited the project and request for construction detail of artificial reefs to be included in action plan and submit for financial support from the Provincial Fishery Office.
Emerging Issues/problems and Solution
3.1 The project possessed only one set of diving equipment resulting in delay of some activities
3.2 Recording change of sea bed by photograph
3.3 Stronger Monsoon
Solutions:
1. The project coordinated with Trad Provincial Fishery Office to borrow from Rayong Provincial Fishery Office additional sets of diving equipment to be occasionally used. Moreover, the project was seeking financial support/donation to purchase more sets.
2. The leaders documented findings & observation in stead of telling story by pictures. Currently, the leaders requested for support from organizations that would gladly donate under-water camera.
3. The project had planned the activities for allowance and planned secondary activities which did not affected by weather condition.
Experience & Lessons Learnt
The project related that capacity-building activities were very useful for implementing the projects. Project leaders had learnt a lot. And when blended in with their own experience, each and every activity was carried out smoothly.
In implementing a project, it was recommended that allowance for time change be considered, as there were several affecting factors. In installing equipment of hardware nature, cares had to be taken so that adverse effects upon environment/ecosystem would be minimized. Depreciation of equipment should be taken into consideration as well.
Benefits of activities had diversity in itself. Some failed activities should not be totally overlooked, but could be a lessons or upgraded into something else. Do not try to carry out activities which community members were not certain and had limited experience or activities under wrong perception.
Project Expense
The project reported the expense of THB: 392,535 out of the first disbursement of THB:299,413.77.
II. Monitoring Visit( August 16, 2013)
Findings & Observation
The visiting team interacted with project leaders in the community multi-purpose building of Baan (village) Laemson of Tambol (Sub-district) Lameklad, where progress of activities was briefed and photos/documents of such activities posted to show on the wall. Major activities that had been carried out included capacity building of youth groups , demarcating community conservation zone of about 10 sq.km on the sea front, fabricating and putting on the sea the habitat for the blue swimming crab, and laying down artificial reefs for other species. All these were related as producing results fairly satisfactorily.
In the village, the only habitat or bank for the blue swimming crab of the project was found laid down for maintenance , after being put into the water for a few months, generating the species to a certain number. According to project leaders, to ensure an optimal output, the habitat should have been put into the water from October to March. However, as the project received the budget during February, the community saw that there was not much alternative, except proceeding with the building under proposed timeline.
Sailing out from village canal into the seafront, the team found an area being demarcated by plastic floating drums where underneath were laid down with metal drum cut and reshaped so as to scare would-be destructive fishers.
Concerning the capacity building activities for youth, the team had met with three of seven members who underwent training on elementary diving (scuba) and were awarded with certification of international standard. These members were said to be able to conduct diving to monitor resources under the sea bed, such as sea grass and native water species.
As the time of the visit fell on off fishing or monsoon season, the team had not witnessed a number of catches/ species nor interaction with wider community members, whose majority had to go out for work in other sectors. However, the progress of activities witnessed was found satisfactory and in accordance with the submitted report with community

Activities undertaken:
1.Launching capacity building of targeted population including youth group
2. Launching demonstration of conservation activities through building habitats and demarcating conservation zones
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation
Results and indicators:
1. Increase awareness and capacity of youth group and community members witnessed by the emergence of a 7-member youth groups who continuously conducted survey and monitor the status of under- water natural resources
2. Increase awareness and capacity of community members (11 core members) witnessed by compilation of local knowledge for re-practice
3. Demarcation of 2 conservation areas of total area of 9 sq.km
4. Evinced increased in coastal and marine resources witnessed by 30 % increase of community income ( increased of blue swimming crab roe by over 3.2 million, for one)
Project Communication:
In addition to the previous communication, the project shared its experiences on FaceBook (12 May 2013 ), there was one visit on August 21, 2014 when the working group of IUCN/Mangrove for the Future initiative visited the project to share experience and make the project more visible
Problems and Issues:
The project related several minor technical issues which were readily addressed by its leaders. There was , however, one institutional issue regarding participation and understanding of surrounding communities. The participation was rather limited. Besides, some of these members sneaked into the conservation zone with their illegal fishing gears. To address this, the project arranged to have meeting for more cooperation.
Experience , Lessons Learnt :
Activities in or under the sea were rather risky. Lives and properties could be lost thus leading to failure easily. Materials used in these activities were relatively costly and deteriorated in a shorter time. Participating members/project leaders should possess enough relevant skill, or facing problems on budget and records of indicators.
Applying existing local knowledge, additional building capacity through study tours and participatory process all contributed to accomplishment of the project. A project should not try a new technology which was not proven or which community members were not sure of.
Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
Together with community network of Trad Bay, the project was drafting a master action plan to propose to Trad province to sustain/replicate activities of the project. The first meeting with the province was scheduled on September 23-24, 2014.
