I. Progress report (June 30, 2013):
Activities undertaken:
1.Launching capacity building through workshop/study tour/forum
2. Launching demonstration of conservation activities through inventorying, rehabilitating, zoning, overseeing

Results of activities:
1. Increased awareness and capacity of core leaders and youth groups witnessed by ability to formulate a more systematic measure and action plan for conservation and rehabilitation of watershed areas, as well as framework for coordinating with non-project members sharing the ecosystems
2. Emergence of regulations for the use and protect the production forest
3. Approximately 56 ha being demarcated as a public forested land
4. Compilation of resources and community inventory to use as a foundation for publication and further development activities with the model or relief map under production
5. Additional 6 plant species in the watershed
6. Witnessed participation from local public sector (district office, municipalities, academic institute and health promotion hospital)

Project Visibility and Communication by other organizations/individuals:
1. On 18 Jun 13, staffs and students from Mahidol University visited the project to share experience with the project on environment conservation under GEF SGP
2. On 21 Jun 13,personnel from Red Bull Co; Ltd (Thailand) visited the project to share experience and offer activity on plantation of mangrove and the watershed under GEF SGP support

Emerging problems and issues:
Due to inconsistent preparation of targeted communities and project leaders ,activities in some period did not fare as scheduled. So,project leaders postponed the activities as appropriate after persistent coordination with communities.
Project experience and lessons learnt :
Positive: Participation and involvement from public sector or government agencies contributed a lot to boost the morale of communities thus their more active participation. Forest encroachment were properly and legally checked under this participation.
Negative: Launching activities which would lead to confrontation should be avoided. A more strategic approach should be applied , especially, in an area with high possibility of conflict between various sectors.

Project expense:

The project reported the expense of THB: 193,400 out of the first disbursement of THB: 192,622.65

II. Project Site Visit (November 13, 2013):
Findings and Observation:
At the environment building in the premises of Pathiw Witthaya School in Pathiw District, the visiting team interacted with a group of students and project leaders representing targeted population. The students took turns giving briefs on progress of environment programmes that had been carried out under supports from both GEF SGP and other stakeholders. Main undertaken activities included resources inventories, demarcation of wetland area and re-vegetation of its degraded portion. These students demonstrated capacity and awareness on conservation satisfactorily. The ridge-to-reef conservation approaches seemed to be understood and under practice by these students.

The visiting team was later led to visit Phru Ta Eye Wetland, the targeted location in Baan (village) Tha Tar Sua, a few miles up the terrain from the school. Situated amid cultivated land of oil palm and para-rubber, large portion of the wetland had been encroached for plantation thus under degradation. To reverse such a trend, the project, together with responsible authorities, managed to retain about 60 ha as a starting point for conservation. The area was officially proclaimed a public land, checking further eminent encroachments especially by unsuitable investment on plantation of oil palm and para-rubber.

If was also found that the wetland still supplied water to small tributaries which converge in Khlong Bangson Canal and hence the Gulf of Thailand. Surrounding community members and members of youth group interacted with appeared to be comparatively keen to oversee the wetland. Especially, the youth group mentioned about taking care of this integrated ecosystem from watershed down to mangrove and coral reefs area in the Gulf of Thailand.

The visiting team agreed that the project had been under progress as planned. And it should be noted that the school was designated the Centre for Environment Study in Chumphorn Province. This was a result of accumulated efforts of three SGP-supported projects in OP 1 and 2. (THA/98/G13, THA/00/G20 and THA/00/G21). These projects launched conservation efforts with youth groups and community members in the district, from coral reefs first then the watershed, resulting in additional supports from other donors and wider recognition throughout Chumphorn Province. The school has a system to transfer conservation responsibilities among students from generation to generation.

Results and indicators:
1. Increase capacity of 80 % of community members witnessed by ability to apply what being learnt and coordinate with public sectors and to plan sustainable use of biodiversity in the watershed
2. Clearer demarcation of the watershed of about 60 ha
3. Compiled data, clearer framework and common regulation for conservation
4. Degraded forest land being rehabilitated by 80 % , with 6 species of medicinal value thriving
5. Compilation of one set of education media on local knowledge in managing natural resources

Project Communication:
In addition to the previous communication, the project welcomed the visits from staff members of the National Environment Fund, Charoen Phokhaphan Co., Ltd, and Thai Education Foundation. The objective of the visits were to share experience, monitor activities of the association for possibility of further support.

Problems and Issues:
The same as mentioned in the progress report.

Experience , Lessons Learnt :
The same as mentioned in the progress report was reiterated .To add more, the project referred to red-tape process of relevant agencies in issuing official document on demarcation of conservation areas. Nevertheless, the project received more support from major stakeholders including one macro-business sector in the location.

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
Since the project location was included in the overall targeted location of the grantee, the project would be under close supervision and management of the grantee.
