I. Progress report (15 July 2013):
Activities undertaken:

Results of activities:
1. Increased both technical and institutional capacity of targeted population witnessed by:
- establishment of advisory & coordinating committee
- 40 members being able to read GPS where 8 being able to work on the system properly
- derived map of project location for reference in launching solution for land use conflict
2. Locations and design of check dams , 15 dams per village, being accepted for construction with classification of targeted population
3. Marginal public lands being reforested
4. Emergence of 150-member community network

Project Visibility and Communication by other organizations/individuals:
On 6 May 2013,two staff members from Nanthaburi News visited the project to publicize a story on participatory water management by building check dams of Tambol Dongphaya, Bor Klua District

Emerging problems and issues:
Remote location and difficult terrain of the project made it difficult to conduct several capacity ?building activities as planned. Moreover, dissemination of data & information among targeted population was not carried out as planned. Therefore, project leaders decided to reduce the numbers of workshops/training events but increase numbers of participants instead and had to enter project location one day in advance.

Project experience and lessons learnt :
Positive:
Using participatory approach, the project received sufficient cooperation and assistance ? reducing conflicts-making the project more holistic and faring smoothly
Negative:
In planning the activities in the field, the grantee did not take seriously into consideration about weather and terrain condition. The result was late in implementation in several activities.

Project expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 427,200 out of the first disbursement of THB: 384,596.96
II. Project Site Visit (December 20, 2013):
Findings and Observation:
At the office of Dongphaya Tambol Administrative Organization in Bor Klua District, the visiting team met with 5 project leaders including community leaders, two staff members of the TAO and one staff member from the Nan Forest Protection Unit. This brief interaction displayed a fairly smooth cooperation among these stakeholders to implement the project. In particular, the forest protection unit worked with communities and the grantee to demarcate protected area and areas that would be allowed for communities to make a living on ? an approach that would result in reducing current land use conflict. It was related that demarcation process was carried out by using GPS where community leaders confirmed their understanding of the system.

In order to witness results of activities to reduce/avoid application of harmful chemical in agricultural practices, the visiting team was led to witness a plot of one member who was allowed to make a living in a community forest, in Baan (village) Sawa, one of the 7 participating villages. It was found that majority of species grown or to be grown were of no or less chemical-requiring species/landraces.

To further witness the results, the team went to Baan Sawa Nua, another participating village, situated a few kilometers from the TAO. The village chief demonstrated how to manage natural water from watershed for reviving step cultivation and promoting less chemical agricultural practices. The management involved building check dams upstream to slow down erosion, maintain humidity and reduce flash flood. With availability of water from the dams, community members were able to channel some portion of the water for integrated farming which was apt to maintain natural soil quality thus required less harmful chemicals.

The grantee estimated project activities were 70 % completed, with every proposed activity launched. It was also noted that project location seemed to be an area with comparatively less promotion of cash crop like corn and para-rubber plantation, even though some project members admitted that a few acres of their lands had been tried with the rubber trees. If the project produced anticipated results, threats from cash crop and para-rubber would be coped with.
