Building Community Capacity on Participatory Natural Resources Conservation
Implementing NGO/CBO: Upper Northern Environment Protection Association (UNEPA): Established first as a conservation group in 2001 and developed to be a registered organization in 2008, after which UNEPA launched a reforestation project for the 84 Golden Jubilee under a support from the Ministry of Education. With this experience, the organization and communities plan to replicate and upscale its activities.
Location of project: A portion of forest-mountain ecosystems in Nan Province?s Dong Phaya District, a watershed of several creeks of Nan River. Population earn their living by agricultural practice, mostly paddy. Due to its steep slope, soil erosion from agricultural practice is rather high. Other threats include expansion of cash crop and para-rubber plantation and unregulated application of chemical substances.
Target Population: 821 families from 7 villages in target location of which 494 families are project direct participants. The per capita income is THB: 34,798.
Main Activities to be carried out:
1.Launching capacity building through training , study tour & meetings
2. Launching demonstration of activities, RE: conservation of forest, soil and water
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation / knowledge management
Anticipated Results and Indicators:
1.Increased capacity and awareness of target population (at least 60 % of 70 target population) witnessed by ability to transfer relevant knowledge and skill with formulated action plans for conservation and sustainable land use
2. Emergence and management of the followings:
- 105 check dams constructed and functioning
- community forest of 17 ha and 20,000 additional native trees, with demarcated fire-break zones
- six ha of cultivated land allocated for agro-forestry and integrated farming thus reducing rate of land erosion
3. Evinced reduction of chemical application by 172-198 families with further substantial results
4. Established mechanism to address land use conflict and forthcoming adoption of local administrative organizations
