Conserving Marginal Forest and Promoting Integrated Farming
Implementing NGO/CBO:: Baan Huay Lao Integrated Farming Group (HLIF): Established in 1999, with mandates to share experience on integrated farming amongst 65 families in 6 villages. Main activities of the group included native plant species propagation, re-vegetation of marginal forests, conservation of community forest and integrated farming in one-half acre to follow self-sufficiency theory and conducting self-monitoring, including production of good quality native rice, and launching other charity in communities.
Location of project: Six villages under the same ecosystems of the Korat Plateau in Mahasarakharm Province?s Na Chuak District. There is community forest under collective management. In spite of its limited forest land, and semi-arid soil quality, the location has been gradually encroached and threatened by lucrative alien species, i.e. para-rubber, eucalyptus, tapioca and sugar cane. 98 % of the population earn their living by agricultural practice ( paddy and horticulture/seasonal crops)
Target Population: 391 families of which 65 families are direct project participation. The per capita income is THB:36,000.
Main Activities to be carried out:
1.Launching capacity building through training , study tour & meetings
2. Launching demonstration of environment conservation activities
3. Launching dissemination of project results
4. Launching participatory evaluation/knowledge management
Anticipated Results and Indicators:
1.Increased capacity and awareness of target population ( 65 families and 20 youth members),RE: marginal forest management, global warming, native edible species, witnessed by ability to participate in planning, & put into practice what being learnt
2. At least 10,000 trees of 5 native species, including species of medicinal/nutritious quality, being propagated with at least 1,000 transferred to grow in project location
3. At least 250 kg/family/season of chemical fertilizer being reduced
4. Emergence of about 30-acre paddy field producing chemical-free rice
5. Acquired compilation of experience and dissemination for replication and up-scaling
