Up scale and Improve Traditional Charcoal Making Practices and Blacksmiths’ Economic Empowerment Project
Blacksmith, locally known as Kami is one of the communal and disadvantaged ethnic people who are famous for their handicraft works for making iron equipment. Blacksmiths are therefore named after their traditional works and occupation. In the rural areas of Nepal, most of the agriculture equipments such as ?plough?, small spade, ?Sickle? etc. are supplied by these blacksmiths and this is the main source of income for their livelihoods. The previous SGP supported project titled Improving Economics of Blacksmiths for Conserving Environment and Promoting sustainable Livelihoods (NEP/OP4/1/08/01) was successful in developing improved charcoal kiln which saved at least 40% firewood, very efficient and well liked by the blacksmith. It has also contributed to controlling forest fire and improved their income. Based on lessons from the previous project, this project would be aimed at upscaling and replicating the improved charcoal making and also improve the economic status of local blacksmiths.
