Spring Adoption Partnership Village – an Ecotourism Approach for Spring and Biodiversity Conservation in Upstream Brantas River
GOAL :
Through the adoption activities Spring community partnerships can be formed in the upstream and downstream protection Springs and conservation of biodiversity in the Upper Brantas river basin districts Wonosalam
Objective 1 : To conserve the water spring area
Indicators : 1. Reduced 20 Acres of land Critical / prone to landslides in the hamlet Mendiro Panglungan village, 10 acres in the village and 15 acres within the Village Wonosalam.Community have additional income from trees and fruits planted nearby the spring and from selling the seeds to people adopting the land
2. The communities gets the economic value from the pecan trees, and the fruits that is grown around the Fountain and the sale of tree seedlings for Land adopters. Trees planted species, pecan trees, trees and trees gondang Bendo (selection of trees on the grounds, for hazelnut within 4 years was able to bear fruit and wood / trunk is not of high economic value, for gondang and bendo is a type of plant that has the ability to absorb water is very high and the wood is not of high economic value) of trees planted can live up to 75% of the 100 rods (with a count of 1 400 ha require tree trunk at a spacing of 5 m)
3. Existing three community conservation groups in three villages
Activities : 1. Training community to conserve the water spring
The activity will be done in the beginning of the month and will take place in Wonosalam Lestari training center. It will consist of training, inventorying, and identifying water springs and seeds needed in each village in order to create action plan for conserving the water spring in each village. Participants for this event are three villages in Wonosalam and it will be facilitated by PWL, BLH Jombang, and LBH. This activity aims to share on how community understands the rights and responsibilities of taking part in water spring conservation.
2. Mapping the spring conservation area
This activity is to map the potentials for the area, such as for water spring adoption, biodiversity, local wisdom, green space for water infiltration, animals, and water spring inventory. This will be done with communities in each village.
3. Building the green house
For communal seed nursery and center of plant collection, a semi-permanent green house will be created. The green house will be made of barbwire to easily control the sun intensity and it will be completed with shelves to hold the seeds collection.
4. Conducting multistakeholders meeting
This stakeholders meeting will accommodate all parties related with area management, such as Perhutani KPH 2 Jombang as the institution responsible for forest management in Wonosalam, BLH Jombang District, Head of Wonosalam sub-District, Head of Villages in all Wonosalam, Forestry Agency in Province level, PWL, and Madrasah Aliyah Faser school.
Objective 2 : To manage and to protect the water spring in Wonosalam
Indicator : 1. Basic information such as plaques to show the water spring location, leaflet, and information board on types of plants in the area are available in the conservation area
2. 5 schools (SMPN 1 Wonosalam, SMPN 2 Wonosalam, MA Faser, MtsN Wonosalam, SMKN Wonosalam) and 3 groups in Wonosalam are involved in water spring protection activities
3. The information center of Wonosalam biodiversity are established and it will exhibit the photos of activities, biodiversity, collection of plants, insects, etc. This information center also provides information in water spring conservation in Wonosalam.
4. The water spring is utilized in sustainable manner. This is measured by the regularly monitoring the water debit.
Activities : 1. Attaching plaques and information tools in the water spring area by involving community and schools in deciding the location and materials to be written in the plaques.
2. Conducting training regarding the water resources conservation
3. Establishing the water spring protection group in three villages (Jarak, Carang Wulung, and Wonosalam villages). This is the replication of what previously done in Panglungan village via KEPUH group. The establishment of the group will be done through formal and non-formal discussion in each village to share the same vision on the importance of water spring conservation for community. The community will be involved to probe the potency and benefit, as well as to analyze the problems and opportunity to do the activities in group.
4. Sharing the water spring conservation plan, which include water spring adoption program and water spring festival.
5. Increasing community economy and participation through:
a. Routine monitoring of water discharge is a form of public participation
b. Economic improvement can not be obtained directly (to support agriculture and livestock), but an increase in public participation in monitoring the conservation area.
c. Goat farm for the makers of bamboo shoots and hunting animals.
d. Providing alternative goats is a communication bridge for the searcher shoots. As long as they do not get alternative income other than stealing shoots that are protected forests and conservation forests is prohibited. Thief shoots will be in the form of the group will be able to participate in the preservation of bamboo and bamboo planting (to be set in the rights and obligations of members of recipient animals). During this communication with people who take the bamboo shoots are done in informal, for the future we need to empower them in a group.
Objective 3 Monitoring and Evaluation
Indicators 1. The program is implemented well based on the schedule
2. The activities in three villages are well implemented just as planned
3. Good communication with five schools in Wonosalam
4. The forum for Conservation School in sub-District level are established
5. Existing documents report in a video
Activities 1. Conducting field evaluation based on the timeline of the program
2. Monitoring the water quality along with the community in three villages
3. Adjacent to the school and is working with the Police Air and MA faser. In Wonosalam we have a network of 5 schools conservationists springs. Over the last 3 years we can only focus on two schools involved, the Water Police of SMPN 1 Wonosalam, and Forest Laboratories of Madrasah Aliyah Faser. In future we will further intensify with 3 schools, SMPN 2 Wonosalam, SMK Wonosalam and MTsN Wonosalam for activism with or replicate the activities that we have done with the two schools that are independent.Evaluating the progress of activities with PWL team
4. Conducting once per three month regular meeting with the village group
