Development of Center of Environmental Education and Permaculture Area for Biodiversity Conservation in the Ecosystem of Siung and Kapen Beaches, Gunung Kidul Regency, DIY Province
GOAL
Preserving biodiversity in the coastal area of Gunung Kidul and manifesting a harmony and sustainable life between the community and the coastal area of Gunung Kidul.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Developing center of environmental education on the southern of coastal areas that can be a center of information and knowledge about coastal and marine biodiversity as well as can be a mean to initiate and support the preservation of the coastal area by prioritising the richness of local culture and community participation.
Indicators : 1. The development of Center of Environmental Education which is an integrated area of coastal ecosystems, permaculture and Biodiversity Park in karst forest, built from the resources and real life around the beach, which can be accessed by children and the general public through interactive experiences. They can learn about information and knowledge on coastal and marine biodiversity.
2. The identification of native vegetation of Gunung Kidul coastal area and Biodiversity Park in Karst Forest.
3. The availability of Study Media and facilitator as supporting means of the Environmental Education Center.
4. The availability of campaign media and publication of environmental education for children and the general public as visitors of the beach.
Activities : 1. Developing Center of Environmental Education, in Kapen Beach, Kemadang Village, Tanjungsari District, Gunung Kidul Regency, that is connected to coastal, agricultural and livestock land, and karst forest. This activity lasted for 4 months (November 2012 - February 2013). The development is carried out by setting up a cottage on Kapen coastal area that serves as the Center for Information and Learning, which is integrated with coastal areas, permaculture and Biodiversity Park in karst forest.
2. Identification & Labeling of Native Vegetation of Coastal area and Biodiveristy Park (Kapen beach, Siung beach and Biodiversity Park in the karst forest near Siung beach). The event was held in December 2012 - February 2013, in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Gunung Kidul and the Faculty of Forestry, UGM.
3. Materials Design and Production of learning media as means of environmental education, which will be held during December 2012 - April 2013.
4. Design and Production of Flyer and Calendar, which will then be distributed to visitors of the center of environmental education, all participants of environmental education, school targets, children around the beach, tourist spots around the coastal area and local governments, as well as Installation of Information Board around Siung and Kapen beaches as campaigning media for visitors, which contains information on biodiversity and environment. It will be held during December 2012 - May 2013. Specially for the Production of Calendar, it will be conducted at the end of the educational environment activity, which is on April 2014 , after the drawings of the children's have been collected.
Objective 2 : Disseminating information and knowledge about biodiversity of coastal ecosystem through environmental education to schools around the coastal area of Gunung Kidul in an attempt to instill love for the beach and marine where they live, with the expectation that they will always keep the sustainability of ecosystems in the coastal area.
Indicators : 1. The availability of Local Content Modules that contain information & knowledge on Biodiversity of the marine & on the Southern Coast of Gunung kidul for children & facilitators that can be reproduced by teachers in schools
2. The capacity development of environmental education facilitators who will implement environment education program to schools.
3. The implementation of local content-based environmental education for children in elementary schools around the coast.
Activities : 1. Materials Design and Production of Local Content Module that contains information and knowledge on Marine Biodiversity and Southern Coast of Gunung Kidul for children and facilitators that can be reproduced by teachers in schools. Design and Production of modules will be implemented in March and April 2013.
2. Training for Facilitator of Environmental Education, for 3 days in April 2013, with matters on Day I: On Biodiversity of Coastal Ecosystem; on Day II: On Biodiversity of Karst Forest Ecosystem and Permaculture; on Day III: on Green Lifestyle.
3. Local content-based Environmental Education, for students in four elementary schools
(4 SCHOOL = 250 students 4 & 5th grade = 8 classrooms, @ 3 meetings), around Siung and Kapen beaches. Environmental education is held in the form of workshops and interactive games, held 1 time per week for every class, for 3 meetings, thus requiring a total of 24 meetings for 4 schools.
The material of Environmental Education are:
Day I: Biodiversity of Coastal Ecosystem
Day 2: Biodiversity of Karst Forest
Day 3: Green Lifestyle
This environmental education will be held in January - April 2014
Objective 3 : Developing a permaculture neighborhood, as well as providing knowledge and specific skills about Permaculture to farmers on the coastal area, in an effort to improve the quality of land, to provide results and better income, and maintain the environmental sustainability on the coastal area until in the future.
Indicators : 1.development of agriculture and livestock on the coastal area to a permaculture area by farming communities, with a system of natural resources management, integrated with a holistic, kind and environmentally friendly manner as well as the appropriate modern technology.
2.The increasing skill of farmers in managing agricultural land in the coast through permaculture training.
3.The quality of land and production of agricultural and livestock farmers in coastal areas with the availability of supporting facilities for biogas and permaculture.
Activities : 1. Development of permaculture area in agricultural and livestock area that have been managed by farmers around Siung beach, Purwodadi villages and Kapen beach, Kemadang village. This program helps farmers to make a new design of permaculture systems in their agricultural land, in the form of zoning and permaculture design activities in May 2013 and permaculture land management assistance which will be conducted since the completion of zonation activities until the end of activity in May 2014.
2. Permaculture Training Program for 10 representatives farmers of Siung and Kapen Beach, who have owned and worked on agricultural area. This training will be conducted in a pilot permaculture area in Imogiri, Bantul, for 5 days in duration of 12 hours per day (the farmers are asked to spend the night at training sites), in May 2013.
3. The provision of working tools, seeds and Biogas Installation for gas and organic fertilizer production, which can help farmers in developing their farmland after permaculture training, which will be held in May 2013.
4. Assistance on Maintenance and Taking Care of permaculture area, which will be conducted in June, August, October, December 2013, and February, April 2014. As for the Assistance on Biogas maintenance, it will be conducted in July 2013 and January 2014.
Objective 4 : Developing business on processing of local food crops from permaculture land as an effort of increasing income and food security of local people.
Indicators : 1. The development of community businesses such as processing, packaging and marketing of local food sources derived from permaculture, such as cassava, sorghum, maize, beans, seaweed and fish, into flour, cake, chips, nuggets, shredded fishes, and other healthy snacks.
2. The increasing community income by managing their joint venture in form of cooperatives.
3. More people consume local food source as an effort to improve food security of local communities
Activities : 1. Training on crop processing & business management for homemakers around Siung beach in Purwodadi villages and Kapen beach in Kemadang village, which will be held for 4 days, in May 2013.
2. Developing Cooperatives which is implemented by women participants, to manage joint capital such as aid in form of working tools and raw material for production. All members of the cooperative will receive the results of the joint venture. The establishment of Cooperatives will be facilitated in May 2013, after the training.
3. Donation of production tools/materials, initial raw materials for production, product packaging and marketing of local food sources, will be implemented within the period of June - October 2013. Production and marketing activities will utilize the long school holiday moment in July and Eid ul Fitr holiday in August. Marketing will be done in the form of retail sales in some of the resorts along the coast of Gunung Kidul, at the Environmental Education Center, and opening booking line. Promotions through Brochures, Banners and online media such as blogs and Web Site
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. The presence of an Integrated Environmental Education Center (beach, permaculture and community forestry), so that biodiversity around Siung beach, Purwodadi Village and Kapen beach in Kemadang Village, can always be preserved.
2. The implementation of Environmental Education to several elementary schools, therefore, children around Siung beach, Purwodadi Village and Kapen beach in Kemadang Village acquire adequate information and knowledge about biodiversity of coastal ecosystems.
