Integrated mangrove forests conservation and beekeeping activities in Bagamoyo District
Problem Statement:
Mangrove ecosystems in Tanzania are threatened by over-exploitation and clearance for rice fields, settlements, evaporation salt-making, shrimp farming, firewood, boiling salt making and lime burning. Almost all these activities are income generating. Therefore, it is difficult to persuade local communities to stop in executing them. This project intends to persuade local communities to stop doing mangrove degrading activities through presenting alternative income generating activities namely beekeeping.
About the proponent;
FAAPECO was established in 2005. It was registered in 2006. Its main objectives are: educating coastal communities on the importance of forest conservation, beekeeping and tree planting; encourage coastal communities to do environmentally friendly livelihood activities such as fish efficient cook stoves; advocacy on HIV/AIDS prevention and environment conservation. They have worked with Foundation for Civil Society Organizations and education institutions.
Project Objective;
Promoting integrated mangrove ecosystem conservation, climate change adaptation and sustainable utilization for beekeeping in the Wami Ruvu communities.
Implementation strategy:
? Mapping severely degraded mangrove areas and establishing monitoring mechanisms for detecting changes in mangrove area covered with time by using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information system.
? Replanting mangroves in degraded areas as mitigation measures
? Increase awareness raising on vulnerability to Climate Change and sustainable utilization of mangrove conservation through PES
? Strengthening alternative livelihood opportunities through promoting beekeeping for maintaining functional mangrove healthy ecosystems
? Strengthening natural resources governance capacity at the local level.
