Poverty Alleviation through environment conservation
Problem Statement:
Uluguru Mountain is a biodiversity hotspot. It forms part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, which is one of 25 biodiversity hotspots in the World. Uluguru is also an important water source. Rivers supplying water to Dar, Coast and Morogoro are flowing from Uluguru Mountains. However, the forests on Uluguru and other Eastern Arc Mountains are experiencing forest destruction by mostly surrounding villagers. Forest destruction is ranging mainly for woodfuel. To address this threat, the NGO has sensitized 5 out of 57 villages that surround the Mountain to establish fuel farms. The fuel farms will supply woodfuel needs of local communities and therefore spare natural forests on Uluguru Mountain from destruction. In future, the project may be replicated on phases to all the 57 villages, Fuel farms will be enriched with beekeeping activities for conservation, food and income.
About the proponent:
CMMUT is a registered NGO. It was established and registered in 2005. It is based in Morogoro and works with local communities around Uluguru Nature Reserve. The NGO has a good track record. It has previously working experiences with SGP, VPO and other Development Partners.
Project Objective:
Conservation of Uluguru natural forest by providing alternative sources of woodfuel through household fuel farms.
Secondary Objective
Enhancing poverty reduction efforts through wider adoption of bee keeping initiatives.
Implementation strategy
? Target area already selected
? Capacity building to instill concern for conservation and impact knowledge on fuel farming technology
? Procurement of energy tools and equipment
? Seedlings maintenance
? Blending with beekeeping
? Production and marketing of honey.
