Sustainable land management and water source protection project
Sustainable land management and water source protection project
Zunglen village is an hour walk away from nearest road point and it has sixty eight households. It is located at 1750 to1990 masl in the middle of cool broad-leaf forest with the slope ranging from 20 to 35 degree. Farmers practice mix farming and all the households raise livestock. Since all the households practices livestock rearing, they faces problem of shortage of water supply due to over grazing of cattle at the water source. Also, the farmers face problem of agriculture production due to steep terrain of their fields, the rain water drains out the manure and topsoil from their fields.
The project ?Sustainable land management and water source protection project? has been initiated with Zunglen Shazhing Tshogpa, a community based group to mobilize villagers in sustainable land and soil management and protecting water sources and reforestation.
Three major water sources at Mokser, Fatheri and Nyrunmo were protected; fencing and banana rhizomes and bamboo were planted in all the three sources thus protecting further degradation of area by grazing. 7ha (17.29 acres) barren land was covered with plantation: different native tree samplings like Champ, Alus and others were planted to reforest the area. The households carried out making of hedge rows and plant Napier slips and Vatever grass in their steep agricultural field that covered 35 acres of cultivated land. This will help converting steep fields into terraces. These activities helped in soil and land management sustainably.
The group commenced year 2013?s two days celebration of World Day to Combat Desertification and Land Degradation with the theme ?Don?t let our future dry up? in Zunglen, Drepong under Mongar Dzongkhag.
