Comparative Assessment of Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches 2013
Comparative Assessment of Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches 2013
In 2003, WWF-Turkey has conducted similar assessment studies in order to reveal the current state of the 20 nesting beaches on the Mediterranean shores in Turkey. These studies were implemented with technical support of experts from Adnan Menderes University and Dokuz Eylül University. This project aims to assess the effectiveness of the conservation measures implemented on the marine turtle nesting sites in Turkey between 2003 and 2013. The assessments undertaken on the 20 nesting beaches in 2003 have shown that 64% of the beaches were in a bad condition. Although precautionary measures were required to be taken immediately, such measures have not been put in place due to the restructuring processes of the responsible organizations. In addition, it was observed that besides being in a bad condition, 24% of the nesting areas were in need of restoration and improvement. In fact, only 12% of the areas were regarded to be in good condition; whereas, none were observed to be in a very good condition. As a result of this project, it is expected that the threats that the nesting beaches currently face will be revealed, the outputs will be discussed in related platforms and recommendations will be developed in order to take effective conservation measures in the future.
