Solar energy for Radio Pakaatie and climate change awareness
Solar energy for Radio Pakaatie and climate change awareness
This project aims to replace the carbon fueled energy source of the radiostation of Pakaatie in Drietabiki (Tapanahony river) with a zero carbon emissions source, being solar energy. Also, cooperating together with an exisiting UNDP CO project where radio operators have already received a technical training. In this project, we will continue with the training, funded partly by SGP and the UNDP CO and the national government, to train the radio personnel in the specific topic of climate change awareness, producing radio programs for broadcast.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The area of broadcast is very large (radius of approximately 10 km), and radio is one of the most important medium of the interior, where there is no television and no internet possibilities. In this way, the radio programs should be able to address issues related to the environment, but whilst on the same time also on sustainable livelihoods.
Notable Community Participation
The community/CBO will be responsible for the transportation of the hardware (solar panels, etc) from Albina to Drietabiki, which takes a couple of days along the river. Also, the radio personnel operating the radio station are all volunteers, they have never received payment, and the radio station has been broadcasting already for 10 years.
