«Rehabilitation of degraded pasture lands of the “Too-Jailoo” plot of Toguz-Bulak a/o, Leylek rayon through planting tree and bush vegetation included in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan».

Toguz Bulak a/o of the Leilek Rayon is located in the Batken oblast in the South of Kyrgyzstan. The project is planned to be realized in the pasture territory called "Too Jailoo" (Mountain pastures) which is degraded due to overuse of area and breeding cattle there. As a result of degraded pastures there is no any vegetation growing in the steep hill, and the hill suburbs there are erosion and landslide. Within the year of 2012 there were more than 30 cases of disasters registered in the Leilek Rayon.
The project idea is in restoration of degraded land through establishing a demonstrational plot (1 hectare) for rehabilitation of natural grass and planting local species of tree and bush vegetation including species listed in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan on the territory with an area of 1 hectare. The project is expected to hold events that raise environmental awareness of local population, and the adoption of measures aimed at regulation of cattle grazing on the degraded plot.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

After the completion of the project, the work of is being continued by the Jamaat Ecoles Leilek and Leskhoz, pasture committees and local administrations. Leskhoz provided assistance in caring of demonstration area and provide the saplings. Rehabilitated plots will be linked by the corridors. All the activities will ensure the long term sustainability of the project.

Linkages gef projects

As a result of realization of the project it was restored 2 hectares of the territory of the destroyed lands on a site "Too - Jailoo", restored vegetation, liquidated prone areas, planted with local species of trees and bushes, listed in the Red book of the KR on the territory of 2 hectares

Replication of project activities

In the course of protection activities attracted families had access to participation in the decision on implementation and monitoring of standards of the number of grazing animals on pasture plots. The adopted document was distributed among the pastures of the local population.

Notable Community Participation

In the frame of the project, the local population were involved into the realization of project by caring for local species of trees, bushes, including the species in the Red List of Kyrgyzstan. The representatives of local administrations, local communities and organizations were included in the Committee of Project Management.

Policy Impact

It was addressed to the local deputies of Isfana City Council about consideration of the question for controlling over the number of cattle grazing in this area

Capacity - Building Component

It was conducted 2 workshops and 2 round tables in order to raise the awareness of population about the project and GEF SGP projects. There were aslo an ecological contest in 4 local schools.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

It was installed information board in 4 places, posters and information plates. There were also issues the posters on degradation of land.

Policy Influence

Leylek regional administration was interested to rehabilitate areas that were in derelict condition and to provide for the improper supervision. The development of ecotourism was a source of additional income for the local people, their families, which would provide services to tourists.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Nearby to the project territory there were 11 rest houses constructed by the local administration of Leilek Rayon aimed at developing an ecological tourism and which nowadays are abandoned properties. That is why the Administration of Leilek Rayon were very interested in our project and in creating the improved services for tourists.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The incentive financial mechanism was elaborated to encourage the local population to plant and care of planted trees and bushes.

Gender Focus

The proper arrangement of ecotourism in the rayon encouraged women to make eco tourism activities and provided services for the tourists.

Planning non gef grant

Upon completion of the project activities it is continuing OO of Ecoles - Leylek jointly by the forestry and pasture Committee.

Project Results

As a result of the project implementation there were the following activities implemented:
- Project Management Commeettee was organized,
- Fencing of protected area is partially finished and will be completed by the end of the project.
- Rehabilitation of vegetation in the area of 2 ha in the pasture will be implemeted in th esecond transh of payment.
- the local species of plants and trees will be planted including those of from Red List of Kyrgyzstan,
- Invoved 40 families will gain necessary knowledge in maintaining of endemic trees as well as in planting saplings and forest berries,
