Improving of an uranium dump radiation conditions in the former mine in Kyzyl-Jar-12 village in Jalal-Abad oblast

The project idea is fencing of 1 hectare in the village of Kyzyl-Jar 12, where the trees and bush vegetation of endemic species will be planted. As the land is adjacent to the area of radiation zone planted trees and vegetation will help to reduce the impact of radiation for more that 4000 people that is 60% of total population.

Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

Developed a web page on the project with the aim of attracting public attention to the problem. Was developed and published informational booklet about the project in the team 300 pieces. An initiative of the youth group for the local school was purchased ecological laboratory for research on the assessment of the environmental conditions at the site, for a local youth group held a seminar on the use of the laboratory.

Policy Influence

Established the project management Committee, at the first meeting approved the composition of the Management Committee Proectare meeting with the local population on the development of the plan of improvement of the environment at the site and its approval.

Capacity - Building Component

For the capacity building the project proposes to conduct series of training for the youth population in the village as well as for the pasture users and other villagers. In the schools there will be organized the workshops on ecological themes.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Redused degradation and conservation of land will have a positive effect to the local livelihood. Planting of trees and vegetation will reduce the risk of erosion and flood in this place.

Policy Impact

The composition of the local committee of the project management will be presented to employees of the village administration and representatives of the local community.

Project sustainability

The rehabilitation of the degraded land will be maintained by the village administration after the completion of the SGP poject. Better use of soil and protecting it from cattle grazing will improve the living condition of population.

Notable Community Participation

The working group of 10 people will be joined to make a fencing of the territory and putting the information boards. Local people and the village administration will undertake a meal for the working group.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To promote the awareness of population the project proposes series of trainings indicating the importance of rational use of lands which is adjacent to the radiation zone. Additionally, the leaflets containing information of project background and its aims, its partners and donors was issued in 300 exemplar with 250 in Kyrgyz language and 50 in Russian.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Village administration Kyzyl-Jar held general village meeting with residents to discuss the problem of grazing in areas adjacent to the areas of Radiation-hazardous tailings, as well as issue of land degradation and threats to the health of local residents. From the local community will set up a working team of 10 people, which will carry out work on the installation site and installation of fencing panels and signs on the fence.

Project Results

For the better raising of awareness and to reach more local population there was organized a meeting of villagers where people could jointly discuss the problem of land degradation and vegetation, the problem of former uranium mine and its radiation. Local people could also identify the co-financing sources and the local administration a/o of Kyzyl-Jar and public Foundation Chintamani itself were taken to find financial sources. Some activities like fencing the perimeter along the mine was decided to implement by 'ashar' way (local community jointly construct by themselves).
In the territory of tailing dump there were planted 400 of Iceland trees.
6 additional meeting were conducted with local population in different regions of the village aimed to establish a group of active people who contribute to the implementation of project by: jointly watering the plants, organizing every Saturday as a cleaning day of the territory.
