Building Capacity for Marine Turtle Conservation Sembehun Community in the Lake Piso Multiple Resource Use Region Liberia
; The major thrust of this project is to ensure biodiversity is protected within the Lake Piso Multiple Resource Use Reserve (LPMUR), through the building of capacity in communities where marine turtles are known to nest/breed. This project seeks to engage a broad range of stakeholders in the conservation of endangered marine turtles that nest on the beaches of the newly gazetted Lake Piso Multiple Use Reserve (LPMUR) in Liberia. During the breeding months, endangered turtles are known to nest on the beaches, but currently no protection measures are given to them, and as such there is large scale harvesting of the females as well as the eggs. The harvesting of turtles and their eggs, is carried out on a yearly basis by professional turtle hunters, itinerant fishing groups and adjacent communities. Most people are not aware of the laws designating these species as endangered and there is need to create awareness on this. Moreover, most people are not aware that alternative livelihood can be created around marine turtles especially if incorporated into ecotourism programs. Given that the species known to nest on the beaches of Liberia are endangered globally, protecting their habitat in Liberia and ensuring all stakeholders are awareness of its conservation status, would ensure that Liberia fulfills its national and international conservation obligations.
