Planning grant: "The development of the project proposal to strengthen the resilience of local communities of Suusamyr Valley to climate and weather conditions."

The idea of the project is to prevent land degradation of Suusamyr Valley through the development of sustainable irrigation, creation of a seed fund to increase fodder and implementation of accurate digital maps to enhance the capacity of local communitites.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Development of the full project proposal and its successful realization will have good effects on local livelihood by recovering: pasters conditions by increrasing its fertility up to 20-30%, better irrigation system will improve the water flow in the average of 30-40% (based on preliminar assessment)

Project sustainability

Overall, the project will ensure sustainable livelihood for the local population by land restoration and improvement of irrigation system and arranging of effective use of water among water users.

Planning non gef grant

Project experience was used by other NGOs in Kyrgyzstan, including CAMP Alatoo, Rural Development Fund, Association of landusers and forestusers, etc.

Policy Impact

The projetc has produced impact at the level of Suusamyr rayon of Jalalabad province, as it created base for discussion, planning and development of adaptation measures in agricultural sector in conditions of climate change.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The working group is an executor for the project, however, local communities, local administration, water users associations and local community based organizations will be involved into the project activities.

Yes, experience of the proejct was replicated widely in projects under GEF SGP support in OP5.

Notable Community Participation

Young people have bacome an important beneficiaries of the project. Special demonstration zone of use renewable energy sources and drip irrigation was created on the base of Kyrgyz Agrarian university. In result student has got opportunity to practice on using these technologies during their university cources.

Project Results

The overall goal of the current planning project is to conduct a baseline study, gathering all the necessary information and data to develop a full project proposal on the resilience of local communities of Suusamyr valley to the CC conditions.

Within the planning project the project Management Committee was organized involving representatives of local people, local authorities and CBOs representatives.

The informational meeting with the representatives of local authorities, village community, water users association and other stakeholders was conducted where people got detailed information regarding the project.
The original selection of the land plots for sewing seeds are identified in compliance with irrigation conditions.

Demonstration area with renewable sources of energy and drip irrigation was created on the base of the Kyrgyz national Agrarian university.
