"Reducing CO2 emissions through introducing renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency of a center for orphans and children from socially vulnerable families in Orlovka."

The idea of the project is to reduce CO2 emissions to 32 tons per year by installing a solar water heating system at the center of temporary care of children "Nurmeeaysa" in Orlovka, Chui oblast. It is also planned to create a small demonstration area of renewable energy sources with solar barrels, simple collector, solar dryers, solar stoves, which will improve the living conditions of inmates of the center and equip them with skills of self-assembly and operation of these facilities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous Peoples will learn the skills to design solar barrel itself, which will allow more than 30 villagers Orlovka to start using these settings in their homes and improve the quality of life of their families. 10 particularly needy elderly installed solar barrels, more than 40 people have read the rules for using a vacuum manifold.

Notable Community Participation

Local community are always in the centre of the project and are involved in all the activities: round tables, discussions, meetings and in questionnaires. The project 4-5 November 2013 held a two-day seminar, with the participation of representatives of local authorities and target groups of the project partners. June 4, 2013, a round table, July 9, 2014 Exhibition and presentation held with the participation of representatives of local authorities and target groups of the project partners.

Policy Influence

Representatives of authority did not recognize the importance of using renewable energy in the beginning of the project. However, after participating in the round table and listening to discussions and meanings of local population their attitude has changed.

Project sustainability

Solar collectors will work in a fully automatic way and doe not need any human interaction except for some technical checking or periodical maintenance, for which the children of the centre will be taught. So it can serve for a long time period for the asylum. Establishment of renewable energy technologies exhibition will enhance the understanding of local people and to accept the alternative sources of energy.

Capacity - Building Component

The capacity of the children and old people of the centre will be developed though the practical trainings on use of renewable energy technologies and by participating in the round table and discussions. It is expected to train 10 pupils from the asylum and more of adult trainees. Gender Focus

The project has provided assistance to 10 vulnerable families Orlivka city.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To inform the population were released posters of 6000 pieces. Also created a website that provides information on the activities of the project and the public social security fund name Fomov?.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

With the use of renewable energy technologies the orphanage will save 515 US dollars per a year. The savings can be directed to improve the quality of life of orphans, for instance: improving nutrition, clothing, toys, etc. Installed solar barrels give access to hot water and to help save money on electricity.

project results were widely replicated via later GEF SGP projects, related to energy-effisiency and use of the renewable sources of energy.

Project Results

The project is currently under implementation but already has some positive results:
- The round table with participation of local authorities and other stakeholders to promote the use of solar energy for the socially vulnerable people of Kyrgyzstan.
- The practical training on assembling and installation of solar collectors was conducted for children from asylum,
- Two solar collectors wee bought and installed 1 in the kitchen and 2 in the bath room of the asylum,
As a result, more than 100 people have got an access to the warm water to have a wash, thus it has a considerable positive impact on the hygienic conditions of the Centre.
The calculations shows, that the economy from using energy of sun saves around 10 000 KGS per month which is 120 000 KGS (almost 2500 USD) annually.
The baseline was conducted in the village of Orlovka about the demands of alternative sources of energy (ASE) among the villagers. According to the questionnaires 100% of interviewees responded they would like to know the process of work of renewable sources of energy.
