Planning grant: The development of the project proposal for increasing the capacity of local residents in the conservation of biodiversity by involving them in the implementation of environmental measures and developing ecological tourism in the buffer zone of the Surmatash National Park.

The idea of the project is in raising awareness of local residents and involving them in activities aimed at environment protection (Inventory, raids), as well as in the development of environment friendly tourism and the development of a full project proposal for the implementation of environment protection measures in conjunction with local population.

Project Characteristics and Results

Planning gef grant

As this is a planning project which aims to collect more data and research it is planned to develop a full project proposal based on the planning project's results.

Capacity - Building Component

Cooperation with experts in the field of environmental sciences and consultants will enhance the overlook of the local population. School children will raise their skills on ecological problems existed in their living area and get to know about possible solutions.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous peoples are also involved on project. They give their suggestions and recommendations on activities and places of rest for tourists.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Sustainable Livelihood will be maintained through the development of ecologically sound community based tourism. Local population will have diverse opportunities to the alternative income through providing different services to coming tourists like: guesthouse in the yourts, horse riding, guiding, selling home made products like milk, cream, butter, cheese, kurut, kymyz as well as different embroidery works like 2shyrdak2 national carpet, and so on.

Project sustainability

The sustainability will be ensured though the financial shceme which will be developed for the coming tourists to pay for the entering of Reserve. This fees will be directed to the maintenance of the Reserve.

Gender Focus

To ensure the equal participation of women and men in the project, it was decided to involve 16 women for the inventory actions to be carried out jointly with experts and consultants. It will help them also to get knowledge in the ecological issues as well as to obtain more information about the species which are included in the Red List of Kyrgyzstan.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To promote this initiative it is intended to develop a project's website which then will be maintained by the administration of Natural Reserve. During the information camping there will be disseminated leaflets and booklets specially designed and issued in the frame of the project.

Notable Community Participation

Within the project it is foreseen to conduct inventory of the local Reserve Surmatash and 16 women will be involved into the inventory process which will enhance their knowledge about the existing flora and fauna in their living area. School children up to 30 pupils will be involved in the environmental conservation campaign by collecting herbarium, observation and conduction of raid as well as cleaning of the Reserve.

Project Results

The overall goal of the project is to develop a full project proposal based on the results obtained from the planning project.
Withing the planning project the results are:
- The project management committee is created and involve representatives of Maidan village administration, Natural Reserve Surmatash, international organizations and local community,
- Social mobilization of local community, school children in the activities like conduction of inventory, raids etc.,
- Identification of husbandry practices' types which are beneficial in terms of ecology and economy to the sustainability of the Reserve.
- Elaboration and maintenance of website of the Natural Reserve,
- Publication and dissemination of information materials: leaflets.
