The Restoration of Mangrove Ecosystem in Mangkang Wetan and Community-Based Mangunharjo
GOAL :
Restoring mangrove ecosystem in Mangunharjo Village and Mangkang Wetan Village as a measurement to control tidal flood and abrasion as well as to supply mangrove based raw material.

OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Improved knowledge and understanding of mangrove ecosystem.
Indicators :
1. Improved knowledge and understanding concerning mangrove ecosystem of each farmer?s group active members by 25%
2. An increase of 1 hectare in mangrove ecosystem areas in both regions through planting.
3. Increased participation of the people by 25% in activities concerning mangrove ecosystems.
Activities :
1. Public dissemination
This dissemination is intended to provide information and explain the plans of the program which will be implemented. In addition, the activity will also include FGDs to get the latest information/updates on the mangrove areas. This activity will be participated by farmers? groups (3 farmers? group), women groups (batik group and mangrove processing group), Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan village administrative officers, the officials at the district level and the relevant government agencies. This activity is done once at the beginning of the activities and takes place at the meeting hall in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan. This activity can be successful if it is well implemented and attended by at least ¾ of the targeted people who are invited.
2. KAP Survey
KAP survey is conducted at the beginning and end of the program. The target of the survey is all members of the farmers? groups, batik groups and mangrove processing group. The survey uses questionnaires to determine the percentage of change in the improved knowledge and understanding of the mangrove ecosystem at the end of the program.
3. Focused dissemination
The purpose of this activity is to find out the preparation of each activity which will be carried out and as an opportunity for each member of the empowered groups to express their opinions in doing their activities. Therefore, the activities to be carried out can be implemented smoothly. This activity will be participated by community development groups (3 farmers? groups and a batik group and a mangrove processing group). The activity is held each time before the project is implemented at the office of community development groups in each village. This activity can be carried out successfully if it is done before the project is implemented and participated by community development groups.
4. Focus Group Discussion.
This activity is intended to find out the extent of understanding, obstacles and the growing issues in the community which are related to the community-based mangrove ecosystem restoration activities in Mangkang Wetan and Mangunharjo. This focus group discussion will be participated by community development groups (farmers' groups, batik group and mangrove processing group), village officials and related agencies. This activity will be carried out twice, one at the beginning of the project and another at the end of the project. The final FGD will be held at the end of the program to identify and design a follow up plan of activities that have been done. Therefore, sustainability of the program is ensured with the many stakeholders especially government/stakeholders in the area that take part in the planning process. This activity will be successful if it is carried out according to the agenda and participated by the community development groups.
5. Data collection and mapping of mangrove species and distribution (both from planting and natural growth) in participatory manner.
This activity is conducted to find out the diversity and condition of mangroves in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan. Data collection is carried out for 3 months in a participatory manner with local communities and community development groups. In this case, several group members will participate directly as data collectors with a team of researchers from the Kanopi Indonesia. Therefore, they can see and learn directly with the research team. Before the implementation of this activity, discussions will be carried out on the importance of data collection and mapping so that people understand the importance of this activity. This discussion is very important to gain public participation and determine the schedule of activity that won?t interfere with daily activities of the people. The steps of data collection are: (1) checking the location of mangrove areas, (2) create a line transect perpendicular to the coastalline of 1500 m long with a spacing between transects of 500 m and make 5 replication plots (3) The size of the plot made is 20 x 20 meters (Table 1), (4) identification of the diversity of mangrove species and counting the number of individuals, tree diameter, height of trees in each plot. Map creation will be made by external experts. The final result is a map of the natural mangrove ecosystem that can later be used as information about the state and distribution of mangroves in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan.
6. Data collection on the diversity of mangrove ecosystem biota using a participatory approach
This activity is conducted to determine the biodiversity and health of mangrove areas. Data collection will be conducted in a participatory manner for 3 months with the local community and community development groups. Similar to the data collection and mapping activities of mangrove, the groups will be directly involved in collecting the data with a team from Kanopi Indonesia. Before doing this activity, discussions will be carried out on the importance of data collection on biota diversity so that the people understand the importance of activity. This discussion is very important to gain public participation and determine the schedule of activity that won?t interfere with daily activities of the people. The data collection on the diversity of mangrove ecosystems biota for species of fish, crustaceans (crabs, crustaceans), gastropods are recorded from the plot made during data collection of mangrove vegetation. The data collection for mammals, birds uses the cruising method along the transect. The final result is in the form of distribution data of biota diversity composing mangrove ecosystems. With such biota information, other potentials than mangrove in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan can be identified, which later can be further developed in line with mangrove conservation activities.
7. Production of mangrove booklets
Mangrove booklets are used as a campaign media to the people and academia outside Mangunharjo dan Mangkang Wetan area. In addition to being directly distributed, booklets distribution will be managed by farmers? groups. The booklet contains information such as the introduction of mangrove ecosystem, mangrove ecosystem components, mangrove biodiversity and conservation of mangroves in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan. The writing of the booklet begins with: (1) literature review, (2) data collection during the activity, and (3) the writing of booklet contents, (4) experts review on the contents. The writing of this booklet involves community and community development groups. The expected result of printing mangrove booklets is mangrove utilization and potential will be known by wider public, which are not limited to those in the location of the activity. It is marked by the printing and distribution of 500 copies in the last quarter of the program.

Objective 2 : Availability of local mangrove plant seedlings.
Indicators : 1. The construction of mangrove nurseries, one in each of the three farmers? groups.
2. Availability of all local species of mangrove seedlings
3. At the end of the program, there are 9000 local mangrove seedlings available in each nursery.
Activities :
1. Construction of nurseries.
The objective of nurseries construction is to facilitate each farmers? group in growing the seeds. The nurseries are constructed on 50m² land rented from the people. The construction of the nursery is conducted in a participatory manner by farmers? groups and the people in 1 month before training on mangrove seeding is carried out. Nurseries in each farmers? group is accompanied by improvement of the existing demonstration plots so that the seeding activity can be more intensive. The expected outcome of this activity is the construction of a nursery for seedlings by each farmers' group.
2. Collection of local mangrove seeds
This activity aims to collect local mangrove seeds present in the mangrove area to be grown in an easily controlled location (the nursery). This activity is carried out at the same time during data collection on mangrove species in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan, which will be participated by farmers? groups and the people. The availability of mangrove seeds in the local area can help the sustainability of native mangrove species in the area.
3. Training on mangrove seeding.
This activity is aimed so that people can improve their skill to produce mangrove seedlings independently. In general, farmers? groups are able to seed mangrove, however for some species of mangrove the groups can not perform seeding. One of the species of mangrove that still have not been able to seed by the group in Mangkang and Mangunharjo is Soneratia sp. This mangrove species has also been extinct in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan region due to abrasion. Therefore the training implementation will be focused on the seeding of Soneratia species. However, the training on seeding other species of mangrove will still be delivered in smaller portions. The training is participated by community development groups after data collection and mapping activities are completed. Training is done two times, which are: (1) introduction to the basic techniques of seeding, (2) seeding practices, which will be held at each location of the activity (Mangkang Wetan and Mangunharjo). The expected output is that training participants can independently grow the seedlings on their own which can become one of the sources of income by selling the seedlings in the future.
4. The posting of mangrove information board.
The posted information board can help data collection on the number of demonstration plots that have been made by the people. People can use the board to introduce their group and activities. The board contains a map of mangrove species and their distribution, a map on the extent mangrove area, descriptions of local mangrove species and the biota composing mangrove ecosystems. The mangrove information boards are made at the end of the activity and placed around the nurseries demonstration plots in all three farmers? groups. The making of these information boards will be directly involving farmers? groups in each location of nursery demonstration plot.
5. Group Facilitation(Seeding Process)
Assistance is necessary to find out the advantages and disadvantages in the seeding processes in order to obtain the method that is suitable to the situations and conditions in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan. The assistance activity is done monthly to determine the development of mangrove seeding activity. The assistance is carried out intensively each month in regular meetings to find out rapidly if problems occur in the seeding activity. In addition, the meeting will always discuss the development of the mangrove seedlings produced in the nursery and sharing on matters related to the mangrove nursery. This activity will be accompanied by a person directly from Kanopi Indonesia, and if possible also may involve external sources for knowledge sharing. Meeting time will be adjusted to the agreement made with the group and as much as possible the time will not interfere with daily activities of the groups. For example the schedule adjusts to regular meetings of the group. This facilitation will target the community development groups which are the groups involved in this project.

Objective 3 : Improved skill in planting and caring of mangrove.
Indicators :
1. The planting of 50% mangrove seedlings from the farmers? groups nurseries around the fishponds and the new non-pond areas.
2. Fifty percent of the seedlings planted by the farmers? group survive.
Activities :
1. Training on planting and care of mangrove.
This activity aims to improve people?s skill in planting and caring of mangrove seedlings independently. The training is carried out twice in Mangunharjo and Mangkang wetan, which are: (1) the introduction of planting techniques along with care techniques, (2) mangrove planting practices with techniques/methods that have been taught. This training will be participated by farmers? group at each location of the nursery as well as women empowerment groups. The success of this training is indicated when the training is implemented twice and participants? understanding and skill in mangrove planting and care is improved.
2. Job training on silvofishery
This activity aims to increase the amount of milkfish production and to conserve mangrove . The application of silvofishery model has been examined at the study level by Rini Budi Hastuti and at the end of the study, the conclusion is that with silvofishery yields can increase of up to 100%. The program will apply silvofishery method to the fishponds of mangrove conservation groups who are also fish farmers. Therefore effectiveness of silvofishery in conjunction with mangrove conservation can be shown through direct application in the field. The training as well as the making of silvofishery fishpond (wanamina) will use fish ponds area that are already in operation. The stages of this activity are namely: (1) a basic introduction to silvofishery, (2) direct practice of making a silvofishery fish pond, (3) the care of silvofishery fishpond. The activity will be held in each demonstration plot of the farmers? groups. The making of silvofishery fish pond demonstration plots can be conducted after the training of mangrove planting and care. The success of the of this activity is indicated when training is implemented and a silvofishery fish pond model is made and also an improvement in understanding and the skill of participants to make the silvofishery fish pond.
3. Facilitation group (Silvofishery)
This facilitation is necessary to find out the advantages and disadvantages in the care processes in order to obtain the method that is suitable to the situations and conditions in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan. The facilitation is carried out monthly which is facilitated by Kanopi Indonesia. To make the facilitation runs well and to have more participation from the group and the people, it will not interfere with their daily activities. In addition to find out the success and failure of silvofishery method, the facilitation is conducted monthly to determine the development of mangrove planting and care. This facilitation will target the community development groups which are the groups involved in this project.

Objective 4 : Increased availability of raw materials for mangrove based products.
Indicators :
1. The availability of at least 2 kg of mangrove flour in one month
2. The availability of at least 5 kg of batik dyes in one month
Activities :
1. Training on flour production.
This training aims to improve the skill in the production of flour made from mangrove. Flour-production is important so that when the people want to make mangrove-based products, the ingredients is always be available because flour have a longer shelf life as opposed to processing the mangrove fruits directly into products. The training is focused on housewives and women in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan who belong to the women?s mangrove processing group. Flour-production training is carried out twice, which are: (1) the introduction of the basic mangrove parts that can be processed, (2) the practice of making flour. This training is done in the Family Welfare Association (PKK) both in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan mid-year in the mid-term of the ongoing program. The output of this training, aside to the implementation of the training, participants will have improved understanding and skill to make flour from mangrove basic ingredients. Leaflets of processed products made from mangrove will be printed as information for the general public as result from this training,.
2. Training on batik dyes production
This activity aims to improve the skill of women in making batik dyes from mangrove-based material. The training is carried out two times, which are: (1) the introduction to the technique of making batik dyes, (2) the practice of making batik dyes. This activity will be participated by women who are members of the PKK group both in Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan. The training will be conducted mid-year in the mid-term of the ongoing program. The output of this training, aside to the implementation of the training, participants will have improved understanding and skill to make batik dyes from mangrove basic ingredients.
3. The production of education T-shirts with mangrove batik motifs.
The goal of producing these T-shirts is to promote and-educate regarding the existence of mangroves in the north coast of Java to general public.
