“Demonstration of eco-sanitation toilet/facilities for protection of international river Pyanj from domestic wastes in Darvaz district”
“Demonstration of eco-sanitation toilet/facilities for protection of international river Pyanj from domestic wastes in Darvaz district”
Darvaz district is a part of the Mountainous Autonomous Badakhshon Province (GBAO), the population is 23.9 thousand, and total area is 2.8 thousand km. Darvaz district is situated in the east, 340 km from Tajikistan?s capital Dushanbe.
According to existing administrative territorial division Darvaz district borders with Pyanj and Khakhan districts of the Afghan Badakhshan Province (Islamic Republic of Afghanistan) to the south, through Pyanj river. Four jamoats are part of Darvaz district: Vishkharv ? 2 933 inhabitants, Qalai Khumb ? 8 337 inhabitants, Nulvand ? 3 521 inhabitants, Sagridasht ? 8 750 inhabitants. The largest human settlements of Darvaz district are: Qalai Khumb ? 1 909 inhabitants, Kevron ? 1 129 inhabitants, Yoged ? 854 inhabitants, Zing ? 839 inhabitants, Dashtak ? 669 inhabitants, Ruzvay ? 636 inhabitants, Khumbi Vali ? 553 inhabitants. The district is washed by international waters of Pyanj River bordering with Afghanistan, and further downstream it is called Amu-Darya River, which flows through Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan lands. The republican and international highways Dushanbe ? Khorog and China ? Tajikistan lie through Darvaz district along Pyanj River.
The above-mentioned villages have been located close to border (international) river of Pyanj in the course of many centuries, and all faecal and domestic wastes of population of these villages are thrown directly into the flowing border river. Naturally this factor negatively affects purity of international fresh waters. There are no calculations indicating a rate of pollution of the international Pyanj River by faecal and domestic wastes. Based on this an objective of NGO ?Zan va Oila? has been identified.
The project will demonstrate a model of 10 constructed, small-scale, alternative, Eco-Sanitary Toilets (dry toilets with urine separation mechanism) for improvement of ecological and sanitary conditions in local villages and conservation of purity of the international Pyanj River, as well as for getting biohumus in two pilot villages of Qalai Khumb ? 1 909 inhabitants and Dashtak ? 669 inhabitants of Qalai Khumb jamoat.
The main goal of the project is to promote the preservation of the purity of international waters (river Panj) through the construction of ten small-scale alternative bio-effective and eco-sanitarian toilets (dry toilet technology) in four secondary schools, two in place of public toilets in the center of the district, one in district administration, four in households of villages Kalai Khumb, Dashtak, Darvoz district.
