Development Local Seed as a Strategy for Nutrition Through Food Diversification and Strengthen Community Food Systems of Food in Dealing with Climate Change impacts
GOAL :
Develop various types of local food as a strategy to diversify food, nutrition fulfillment and strengthen community food systems in facing climate change impacts in Lembata region.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Setting and managing community demonstration garden based on local food crops.
Indicators :
1. An extension of area and location of community demonstration garden. From the aspect of area, extending it into 3 hectacres. Besides the demonstration garden in Merdeka village, a community garden at the district level will also be made after identifying the land and the groups of managers.
2. A list of sources of local food crops which are resistant to drought.
3. List of attendees, minutes of meetings, photos.
Activities :
1. Build, manage and organize a community garden as a place to collect potential local food in facing prolonged drought. Currently, the demonstration garden is using a land of one of KLOMPAALD member.
2. Find out and record collection of local food crops and data of food crops types in one certain village areas up to regency-level.
3. Map, monitor land being developed by the community. Mapping will be carried out on demonstration garden, including the planting pattern. Therefore, the development can be seen clearly. Also on how many people and community gardens are benefiting from the demonstration garden, in term of seeding, or even the knowledge to manage their land in a sustainable manner to tackle the impacts of climate change. Mapping and monitoring of community garden will be carried out by community, along with PIKUL. One way to do them is through photo in the demonstration garden that would make the recording of each developmental stage easier.
Objective 2 : Providing learning space for community in order to develop and utilize local food crops (diversification) hence improving resilience to impacts of climate change.
Indicators :
1. A model of community-level seed bank
2. A group of farmers specialize in seeding. Currently, Mrs. Siti is the only person who is able to seed out of various local food crops. Through demonstration garden, a special breeding group is expected to be identified and trained.
3. The types of local foods being cultivated in farmers' fields increases. Not only the type of rice that increased (from white to red or black), but also a variety of tubers, cereals (sorghum, barley) and local corn, including waxy corn, the expected pest resistant corns.
4. Records of process, photographs.
Activities :
1. Workshop on demonstration garden belongs to the community Practices of seeding in community?s fields.
2. Capacity building by participating in training/workshop on community seed protection organized by the Association of Indonesian Farmers Seed Bank in Jakarta/Bogor in late 2013. This workshop can provide a more in-depth knowledge about seed as well as the expansion of network to other breeders in Indonesia. KLOMPPALD will be one of the participants and expected to strengthen the capacity and also to strengthen the position in having a dialogue with local government.
Objective 3 :Build partnerships with local governments to develop drought-resistant local food and produce the food to meet community?s needs of food.
Indicators :
1. There is a MoU between KLOMPPALD and local government with support from Pikul and IB for the development of local food.
2. Photos, records of the process.
Activities :
1. Having audience with the local government in regency-level on the potential of local food in Lembata and on the importance of government support to enhance food self-sufficiency in islands.
2. Public discussion about the importance of local food development for food security and increase household income.
Objective 4 : Build community business initiatives based on local food on land and on the coast. This phase begins with identifying materials and products potential to support sustainable economy.
Indicators :
1. A derivative product from local food crop that can easily be consumed by wider community (ready to cook corn, sorghum flour, etc).
2. A development of food product on coastal areas, which correspond to the potential of each region.
3. A packaging that ensures the hygiene and safety of the product so that the product can appear ready for market. This activity will be carried out with PIB.
Activities :
1. Processing of local food from the land: grain of sorghum/barley into a ready to eat meal type.
2. Processing of local food from the coast: salted fish, fish crackers.
3. "Product branding of community local food" by creating an identity of KLOMPPALD group product.
4. Exhibition of various types of processed foods to introduce processed products of KLOMPAALD group. The event will be carried out in district level.
5. Pilot of group business (simple shop) to introduce various types of food sources. This activity is carried out after production activities run well. The business will take place in KLOMPAALD secretariat whose location is in the city.
Objective 5 :Increase KLOMPPALD capacity as a stronger organization, so it can be a learning organization and a learning center for various stakeholders. It will be carried out through the process of facilitation, monitoring and evaluation by PIKUL as well as by PIB.
Indicators :
1. Understanding and skills improvement to manage local food in a sustainable manner through a series of meetings, exchange of information, training.
2. Increase in administrative and financial management with the mentoring process of PIKUL.
3. Documentation in form of photos and narration as one of learning material for local food management to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Activities :
1. Coordination and monitoring meetings during the ongoing program. At the beginning of program and at least once in every 4 months to the location (Lembata).
2. Training about financial management and local food in Lembata.
3. Evaluation process and documentation of field activities.
EXPECTED OUTPUT :
1. Raising of awareness and knowledge of the community in Lembata district about the potential of local food in facing climate change impacts with initiatives started from Merdeka village.
2. A demonstration garden in Merdeka village as a place to learn to know about, to grow, to cultivate local crops, and the potential of food in coastal areas.
3. A model of local food systems, including the seeding and protection.
4. The variety of food products consumed in KOMPPALD group, with the availability of processed local food products.
5. Documentation on the process of setting local food system to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
6. Community and consumers around Lembata obtain affordable food products and health.
Participants and/or Project Beneficiaries
Direct : 1,340 KLOMPPALD members who are registered and spread in 9 districts in Lembata, KLOMPPALD Secretariat. The composition of the group is 70% women and 30% men. (supported by PIB and Pikul).
Indirect : People in Lembata region because they can consume local food which are produced independently and sustainably and are resistant to the impacts of climate change.
