Promotion of preservation of snow leopard, which is listed in the International Red Book, by carrying out a broad awareness campaign about the snow leopard and measures for its protection in Kyrgyz Republic.

The idea of the project is to inform the population of Kyrgyz Republic on the importance of conservation of the snow leopard, draw attention to the issue of its disappearing by creating a website, publication of a popular science book and a photo exhibition.

Gender Focus

Both women and men were equally involved in realization of the project events, on positions of experts and participans of the project events.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Colourful book about snow leopard was issued in the project. Website www.inbirs.info is also functioning permanently.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Global environmental benefits from the project consisted in the wide dissemination of information on measures of the snow leopard protection which is a rare species listed in the Red book of Kyrgyzstan and the IUCN Red List.

Capacity - Building Component

In order to rais the awareness of local community were undertaken the following activities: - published the book "Traces of snow leopard"; - designed web-site devoted to the snow leopard; - organized a photo exhibition in Bishkek; - held a press conference with the presentation of the book "Traces of snow leopard".

Notable Community Participation

Journalists have made a tremendous contribution to the project. Also close work of ecologists and biologists had a positive impact on capacity building in the field of biodiversity conservation.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Materials for the book were collected in close cooperation with local communities from different regions of Kyrgyzstan, especially from Issyk-Kul province.

Project sustainability

Specially developed within the project a website about the snow leopards continues to function and update with news and relevant information about the leopards.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project does not increase or extend the income ofthe local community, but the use of the publication at the local level can have a positive impact on the development of ecotourism in the buffer zones of protected areas that are engaged in the protection of the snow leopard, for example, in the natural Park "Zarkent" in Batken Oblast.

The project influenced on wide dissemination of information on measures of the snow leopard protection which is a rare species listed in the Red book of Kyrgyzstan and the IUCN Red List.

Planning non gef grant

The project meets the objectives and expected results GEF/SGP strategy of Kyrgyzstan, as is focused on the preservation of biodiversity. The project is also linked with the goals and objectives of the strategy, included in the "Information and public relations".

Policy Influence

The project prepared strong base for further GEF SGP activities on protection of the snow leopard. In year 2014 it resulted to creation of the working-level secretariate on protection of the snow leopard globally.
