Biodiversity and Red Meat: Investing in Stewardship and Governance for Community-based Natural Resource Management in Namaqualand
Biodiversity and Red Meat: Investing in Stewardship and Governance for Community-based Natural Resource Management in Namaqualand
1. Support Leliefontein?s Biodiversity and Red Meat Association to officially register as a Primary Cooperative
2. Have a two day strategic planning meeting with the BRMA management and the broader Leliefontein community at the start of the project in May 2013 to ensure broad community understanding of the most critical areas the BRMA needs support in and to identify powerful catalysts to enable the successful operation of a community owned and ?driven conservation stewardship program. The results of this planning will define exact mentorship needs and will be used as guideline for this project.
3. Hold quarterly meetings in Leliefontein, with the BRMA members and land management authority, led by the Leliefontein BRI Committee and attended by CSA?s Stewardship Extension Officer and Project Officer.
4. Facilitate ongoing participatory monitoring of all farmers with signed agreements by 3 community-based conservation farming officers in Leliefontein of wetland condition and conservation-friendly agricultural practices (such as sustainable stocking rates, rotational grazing).
5. Conduct quarterly compliance monitoring in Leliefontein
6. Provide four training sessions, in June, September, and October 2013, and February 2014
7. Facilitate two local knowledge exchanges for representatives of the BRMA for greater learning in order to apply and implement best practice land management.
8. Hold a Lessons Learned/Way Forward workshop (March 2014
9. Produce informational materials for the management authority, 1 edition of Veepos (CSA?s local newspaper and knowledge sharing tool produced in the local language for the community ?see Appendix 1 as a separate attachment to this proposal) that will focus on the BRMA and its development, activities, exchange visit activities and future plans.
10. Identification and roll-out of investments in improved agricultural productivity and ecological sustainability
