The project equally contributed to the goal of Kabul municipality of creating more green areas and functional public park for the resident of Kabul city. In addition to establishing public parks, Mr. Nawandish, the Kabul Mayor vowed "In three years, we would have Kabul covered with trees?.
As mentioned, the park area had partially been constructed by the USAID contractor company ??Kabul City Initiatives (KCI) ??but due to lack of electricity and lightening, even the constructed area in the park used to remain empty soon after the sunset. The surrounding residents were reluctant to visit the park; neither allowing their children to play after dark in the park due to darkness. This was the case with the constructed part of the park, while the empty area in the park covered with unplanned trees and unleveled ground was gradually changing to a landfill area and a hideout for the drug addicts causing serious threats to the surrounding families and youth in the area. The lightening of the whole park with solar powered electricity and changing the empty park area in a real, attractive and useful recreational area by planting greenery watered through advance drip irrigation system gave new hopes to the depressed communities in the area. ADA monitoring visits observed maximum utilization of the resources in the park area. The solar lights provided opportunity for the inhabitant to use the park area both for studying as well as youth to enjoy playing various sports after working hours. As shared by one of the inhabitant (university student) ?? I am found of studying in open area but since I am working during the day and return home at sunset, therefore, it was difficult for me to study outside as there was no space to study in a calm and peaceful environment. The limited space we had was on one hand without lightening while on the other hand it was mainly occupied by those whom were playing sports. Now the extended park equipped with lightening and greenery will provide me with opportunity to enjoy my studies without being disturbed by anyone??. Besides, the extension of the park area, made a significant difference for the adjacent girls school. The girls school?s eastern gate had a direct entrance to the empty part of the public park which they were mainly using as a shortcut route to cross and go to their houses. Ruqia, a student of 7th class enthusiastically said ?? it?s great to see that this part of the park is also covered with greenery and lightening, now it is free of dust and we will play here??.
The use of the renewable energy (watering the greenery through solar powered water pump, drip irrigation technology and solar lightening system) largely attracted the local inhabitant and increased their interest in the use of this safe, friendly, and cost effective technology. ADA took the opportunity to advocate for the use of renewable energy technology and kept the discussion on the impact of the climate change as part of every meeting with the community and local municipality. In addition, separate training sessions conducted for the municipality staff and the local youth Shora to discuss the waste management, impact of climate change, leadership and management. The training materials were supported by the religious references which gave a new direction to the thinking on the impact of climate change and keeping the environment clean and healthy.

National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), the lead governmental organization on the environmental issues had always remained the point of contact and close coordination body for ADA on projects related to environmental protection. For broader advocacy, understanding the impact of the climate change and creating awareness on the negative impact of carbon emission and destroying jungle/wild life, ADA in consultation with NEPA published posters depicting the effect of human activities in deterioration of the environment.
