On-farm protection rare farm animals in the Velipoja region
On-farm protection rare farm animals in the Velipoja region
The Velipoja region along the Buna River near the border with Monte Negro is a treasure of natural and agricultural diversity. The most notable ones are old breeds of pigs such as ?Siska? type pigs, ?Spotted of Scutari? and ?Wattled pig? identified in Back Rrjoll, Velipoja region. The area hosts also other rare farm animals such as the Shkodra Sheep and rare goat breeds.
SGP was successful in one of its previous project in applying an emergency intervention to stop genetic erosion and decrease of animal numbers in the population of local pigs ?Siska type pig?, ?Black Spotted of Scutari? and ?wattled pig?. The project was successful in increasing the awareness and the willingness of the locals in preserving these breeds. Typically, the archaic breeds despite their high quality meat have lower production and do not compete well with modern and mass produced meat hence it is needed to be subsidized in the initial stages.
This project will support a local group of farmers in building a ?maternity stable? to be used for pigs and goats.
