The success of separate waste recycling is based on the existence of a viable market for the recycled materials as well as on an economy of scale: too little materials recycled do not make economic sense for the businesses involved.
So far in Albania the only recyclable material were the aluminum cans while paper and plastic were not attractive for the collectors. Recent changes have marked the creation of new businesses that have created new and increased demand in recycled plastic and paper. In this context, this project aims at the creation of 3 social enterprises in the ROM community in Tirana focused in the collection and selling of plastic, paper and metal. The project will train 30 young people from these communities in forming and management of social enterprises.
Project is financed by SGP under POPs based on the fact that burning of plastic in unregulated waste dumps is the main source of POPs in Albania.
