Sustainable Landscape Development through eco-tourism based Livelihood Promotion in Himalayas
The project provides a source to the sustainable livelihoods to the community dwellers of Himalayan ecosystems in and around Chamoli District of Uttrakhand State of India. The project addresses the environmental concerns hovering over Himalayan ecosystems. In the past decade over exploitation of natural resources by the local community have increased two folds. Overgrazing, pasture land mismanagement, exploitation of herbs and medicinal plants supplemented by the low fertility of the land is a major threat to ecosystem. Disappointed by the unemployment and less opportunities in the villages youth and farmers are migrating in the nearby cities in search of employment. Project activities which opens the livelihood activities for the community: 1. Promotion of Organic Farming and Food processing Facility, 2. Establishment of Food processing Unit or Facility, 3. Training program on organic farming, seed variety selection, orientation, agri-techniques of millets. 4. Composting techniques and nutrient management and pulses cultivation- 4 training program for 60 farmers of 3 villages in 2 years, 5. Conservation through Cultivation of Mountain Millets and pulses in 3 villages covering sixty families and 2 hectare agricultural land under organic practices, 6. Market linkage development through CFC and sale out let as well as net marketing for the urban buyers, 7. Organic composting and Fruit plant Nursery for conservation of Citrus Fruit variety of higher Himalaya, 8. Herbal Garden Based Common Ayurvedic Herbal Therapy Facility in Biotourism Park and promotion through Traditional Healers, 9. Establishment of a centralized nursery for the supply of Herbs, Medicinal and aromatic plant varieties at centralize location, 10. Promotion of eco-friendly Craft for Livelihood and Conservation- Nettle- and Bamboo, 11. Bamboo Craft production cum design or prototype development workshop-4 in 2 Years. Conservation of Himalayan Bamboo/ Ringaal in 2 hectare land, 12. Biopesticide formation through the extracts of Nettle processing.

Gender Focus
Both men and women are engaged in the income generation activities through the project. Starting from the PRA the community will be involved in trainings and livelihood activities. Women have more productive hours to work and there will be drudgery reduction. The activities will focus to improve the health and hygienic condition of women and children; the activities mark increase in the participation of weaker section and women in the Village panchayat and Van panchayat meetings. Men will generate income through community using herbs for minor illness by saving money; cultivation of medicinal herbs increased at local level.
