Creating Resilient Communities in a Landscape Approach through Institutional Strengthening in Tarikhet Block
The project provides opportunity of practicing livestock based livelihoods to the rural communities residing around Himalayan ecosystem in Haldwani district of Uttrakhand state of Indian sub-continent. Last decade has witnessed rampant deforestation and soil erosion in the area. The implications counts loss of soil fertility and effects are visible in livestock too. Considering Himalayas one of the fragile ecosystems the project seeks for a relief for 7 villages which through available animal population will establish a firm sustainable dairy model as a source of livelihoods. Improvement in animal health, medication, breeds will enhance milk and fat productivity. The byproducts like cow dung and slurry further applied in field will enhance crop production.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Both men and women are to be involved in establishing dairy linkages. Paravets and jankars (information disseminators) will be from the women and men population. They will also be developed as entrepreneurs for managing dairies and establish market links. The federation based dairy consists of both men and women as its active members. Men will be engaged in farm land management, nursery raising, and exploring market links. Women through SHGs will be trained in operating biogas units and smokeless cook stoves.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Information on local biodiversity is a key to awareness on the local ecosystems. Public awareness in this respect is to be promoted on the issues like deforestation, soil erosion and poaching of wild plant and animal species. The project intends to address these issues in the project orientation meetings. Interactive sessions from the local forest officials and ecologists will be the means to promote the issue.
