Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

10 rural youth volunteers will be trained to undertake elementary field investigation, evaluate/ prepare small schemes and acquire basic skills in water, terrain, solar energy management and applications.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Exposure visits one per sub theme (grasses, horticulture, herbal/medical plants, vertical shaft brick kiln, goat rearing) will be organized. The project will expose the community to new agro-skills and knowledge. Village meetings will be conducted by the committees in order to make decisions related to delegation of works, cost sharing, roles and responsibilities. Drills will be rehearsed at the village levels. Basic knowledge regarding construction techniques, planting saplings, recording varieties will be provided.

Policy Impact

Links with FRI, IGFRI, IGRI have been established. Community stake in enhancement and protection of its environment will be introduced. As the NGO is already operating the area, the Panchayat (local Government) has given a clearance to use their land. District authorities are regularly informed and the copy of the sanctioned proposal will be send both to the DC Etawah and Forest Dept.

Gender Focus

New graam kosh (village treasuries) and Mahila Mangal Dals (women?s action committees) will be formed to enhance all round involvement and commitment with sense of ownership and stamp of brand. 20 SHG?s will be created. The project will emphasize building the skills/capacity of the community for handling and managing the ecosystem. They will introduce grasslands/pastures as a replicable model for extension for income generation of marginalized communities by promoting cattle rearing and allied activities. The local communities will be involved at all the levels like cost sharing, decision making process etc.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The NGO will launch its own bulletin and will focus on the issues related to environment and land degradation. Dissemination of results of studies, workshop, discussions through pamphlets/ printed material.

Capacity - Building Component

The Project will focus on building the capacity of the community. Exposure cum demonstration cum learning workshop on ?Ecology and field technology as tools of land management for rural survivor? will be conducted. Children?s exchange programme between Himalayan and ravine region: one visit each to IGFRI, CRIG, and FRI by community leaders will be organized.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community but 20% of them are local destitute, Schedule Castes and marginally poor communities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at reinforcing equation between community prosperity and biodiversity in rural environment by bringing result of scientific applications and rural technologies. The project will provide model for income generations through better land management and incentive of community involvement. A total of 5000hecs will be directly affected for better productivity and increased fertility.

Project Results

* 2 SHG denominations were formed one group for check dam and other for cluster plantation. 4 SHGs were involved for check dam and 3 SHGs in the cluster plantation. The women's action committees fully organised as mahila mangal dal are involved in continuous income generation activities and are linked to banks for livelihood actions. Mixed cropping with horticulture component was introduced.
* 3 check dams constructed and height of old check dams raised by 1.5 m, strengthened apron, streamlining spillway, stabilising shoulders and providing buttress walls. The landscape of the project is full of biodiversity and have diverse range of flora and fauna. The Dam and plantation are under the protection of retired army force and their young children of respective villages.
* Integrated forest and fruit tree clusters were introduced on non forest lands to provide new incentive to volunteers on introducing horticulture in arid land. Each cluster now has 250-300 trees with mix of 25% forest variety and 75% mango, CAZRI ber and guava.
* The up-gradation of dams constructed in the earlier phase was completed by increasing the height by 1.5 m due to which the water retention and the sub soil water level has gone up. Approx 2000 tree saplings were planted under the leadership of SHGs.
* Small Pond is also developed near all the 3 Dams which is used for agriculture purpose, clean drinking water is also provided to many animals and migratory birds.
