Multi-stakeholder ownership for reclamation of grazing land and establishment of agro-forestry for fodder generation and management

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

100 percent awareness will be created among the community members on importance of fodder development for their livestock feeding needs. 100 farmers were taken for exposure visits to Regional station for forage production and demonstration, Andhra Pradesh. 12 meetings (monthly basis in each village) will be conducted by FD & MC.

Capacity - Building Component

1200 farmers will be trained in latest technologies on fodder development. Adequate training on technological implications for sustainability will be conducted. 15 demonstration plots with different fodder varieties were established in villages to demonstrate the cultivation methods and varieties of nutrition fodder.

Gender Focus

15 Fodder development committees were formed involving the landed and landless farmers. 200 farmers contributed their man days for the development of 15 model demonstration plots cum nurseries. 100 acres of land will be cultivated for fodder to cater the needs of the livestock fodder needs. 40% income enhancement has been observed among the CFPG members.

Notable Community Participation

5 Commercial Fodder Production Group (CFPG) will be formed with 45 farmers (including young boys) for creating self employment opportunities for the young farmers of the village.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

600 farmers were provided with fodder production kits comprising of inputs like seeds of improved varieties, hybrid nutrients, plan protection measures, fertilizers, fungicides etc. (directly from the organization).

Policy Impact

Fodder Development Committees will be constituted in 15 villages and will lead the fodder development and management initiative01s in the villages apart this monitoring and developing linkages with ongoing Government schemes and programs such as MGNREGS and other schemes. The government official will support the program for the development of fodder at village level. The project will attempt to bring convergence between different concerned primary (village level) and secondary stake holders (concerned Govt. Departments).

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The main aim of the project is to reduce environmental degradation and fodder scarcity by enhancing the knowledge of community on natural resource management, improved livestock manager and strengthening linkage with all the stakeholders. The NGO will reclaim the 1000 acres of grazing land under Grama Panchayat (Local Govt.), to facilitate the establishment and management of suitable agro-forestry system by the communities. The committee for balanced environment/ecology in both forest and village will provide livelihood and source of income for tribal, landless, forest dwelling and marginalized population.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project will focus on enhancing coordination between key Government departments CBOs to work out a suitable mechanism for sustainable use of land in 15 fringe villages of Amrabad, Achampet, and Lingal mandals of Mahabubnagar district close to Wild Life Management forest area of Achampet which will be helpful in establishing & managing agro- forestry system.

Project Results

? 15 Fodder Development & Management Committees formed.
? 1200 acres of land cultivated and managed for fodder development by the Farmers.
? 4, 53, 036 has been mobilized towards land development, fodder sowing from the Forest Department.
? 12 meetings (on monthly basis in each village) conducted by the FD&MC in the month and record of important resolutions taken during the meetings are placed in every village.
? 15 Model Demonstration plots cum nurseries are developed.
? 8 varieties (CO-3, Sabbi, Luzern, Cow pea, Stylo, Maize, jawari, Azolla) of fodder species are cultivated in demonstration and nurseries)
? 200 farmers contributed their man days for development of plot
? Department of Forests, Animal Husbandry and Regional Fodder Station have supported the organization in terms of technical and finances.
? 1000 farmers have cultivated fodder in their land and are catering the fodder needs of cattle in project villages. Thus reducing the dependency on forest for cattle grazing.
? Joint Collector of Mahabubnagar District has instructed the Mandal Revenue Officers of Acchampet, Balmoor and Lingal Mandal?s to support the Fodder Committee in fodder cultivation in the common grazing lands being provided by Gram Panchayats.
? 620 farmers have been provided fodder seeds free of costs from Regional Fodder Station.
? 80 Farmers have been provided training cum exposure visit to RFS to develop an understanding on the high nutrient varieties of fodder grasses.
? 1200 profiles of the farmers have been collected towards baseline at the inception of the project to understand the situation socio-economic standards of the farmers.
? 750 acres of common grazing land has been identified and cultivated for fodder to meet the needs of cattle feeding and grazing.
? 100% of awareness created among the community members on importance of fodder development for their livestock feeding needs.
? Village wise Fodder Development and Management Plans have been development in 15 villages.
? 150 stakeholders (community members, officials from Animal Husbandry Dept., MGNREGS and other line departments) involved in developing action plan.
