Community empowerment through sustainable livelihood generation using diverse traditional knowledge systems – up scaling of the earlier GEF/SGP Project

Project Objectives:
The Project aims to enhance and scale up the functioning of the KTSHG consisting tribal and local communities that have been established and supported by KEEP. The process includes 1) Improvement of existing product range , scaling up their volume of production and sale, development of new products using the existing range of NTFP and equipping and improving the infrastructure to meet the results of scaling up. 2) Including agricultural produce (Supporting small and marginal farmers) in to the product range. Developing value added products from the agricultural produce for marketing. 3) Developing craft skill- based income generation activities for people.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

50 booklets will be printed containing awareness materials on NTFP species, traditional sustainable methods of harvesting and use. 100 brochures consisting the product information will be prepared and distributed. Media coverage will be done as and when required.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Knowledge base of the tribal communities will be used for imparting craft skills building. SHGs will be formed to empower youth and women in the tribal community living around the Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary, Chitoor District, and Andhra Pradesh.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Monthly community meetings will be conducted in the target villages to encourage participation and awareness of the community. Educating the communities, farmers and the general market about nutrition, sustainable yield and use of NTFPs. Craft based skills (pottery, carpentry, needle craft etc) will be enhanced through training and workshops with experts, designers and artists.

Gender Focus

The NGO has 20 members of these 9 are women. Interested women (5) will be sponsored to undergo a course in tailoring and machine embroidery. Capacity building of local women and youth in areas of processing, value addition, distribution and sales of products. The quality of the product range will be improved and research on new products will be done. Sale will be increased by using marketing strategies. At least 2 more SHGs will be established by the end of the project. Health and environmental conservation will be taken into consideration (No preservatives and artificial chemicals will be used in food and cosmetic products). People will be involved in augmenting the resource base through nursery raising, a-forestation and establishing herbal and medicinal gardens in the tribal and village community.

Policy Impact

The permission of forest department for forest surveys is required. The NGO has the following as their partners including; ATREE- Bangalore, Madhura Coasts- Bangalore, Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions and Practices- Bangalore etc. The lessons learnt may be used by the State departments in policy making.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at improvement of existing product range, scaling up the volume of the production and sale, development of new products using the existing range of NTFP. Craft skills (carpentry, pottery, needle craft, thread work and tailoring) will be useful in generating income for the people. The project will help in establishing at least 2 centres in 2 different villages one of them is for craft based activities and other for NTFP processing. The project will promote sustainable methods of use of non- timber forest produce to preserve forests ecosystem.

Capacity - Building Component

Training will be organized on management of a micro enterprise in area of processing, value addition, distribution and sale of products to make the youth and women independent. Awareness Programs will be conducted on local NTFPs, need for conservation and use of the NTFP species. Basic education and training will be given to local women to enable them to independently administer day to day operations of the SHG.

Notable Community Participation

Youth and women will be recruited and trained so that they can become independent and have their own infrastructure.

Project Results

* Developed 29 new products (Agriculture & NTFP based) from 21 before project period to 50 at present.
* 40 new hand-crafted products covering a wide range were made by KTSHG.
* Students from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madanapalli, Palamner and the local villages were involved in village level awareness programs, primary data collection and afforestation work. Linked 5 Panchayats (Theertham, M. Kothur, Vengamvaripalli, Maduramdoddi and Yerinagepalli) under the GEF project area to the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and APSBB by facilitating formation of BMCs in them.

* Worked with State Biodiversity Board, FRLHT Bangalore and also with 5 educational institutions.
