Biodiversity Conservation through Apiculture for the sustainable livelihoods of the poor tribal people of Western Ghat Area
Honey has a high potential in Kerala (cosmetics, medicine etc.) There are several types of indigenous and traditional hives including logs, clay pots, wall niches, basket and boxes of different sizes and shapes in modern beekeeping the combs are built on movable wooden frames. To promote tribal community through scientific, local and modern techniques as well maintaining biodiversity will be the prime strategy of the project. It envisages and promotes the beneficiaries who have been below the poverty line to eradicate poverty and enhance their economical status through income generation and by keeping biodiversity conservation.
Bee keeping constitutes a resource of sustainable income generation .Tribal populations and forest dwellers have honey collection from wild honey bee nests as their traditional profession. The project mainly aims at well being and up-liftment of tribal communities of Western Ghat's forest area, as even now the tribal community are in a very backward condition and atrocities in education, human rights, environment, prohibition in temple entrance etc. Moreover tribal families including women and children are working as bounded and restricted laborers and are treated as traditional slaves.
This proposal is to provide livelihood for weaker sections especially indigenous tribal groups to generate permanent income through beekeeping, honey processing, marketing etc. The project envisages more scientific, by giving importance to biodiversity conservation through Api-culture for sustainable livelihood of the poor tribal communities of Western Ghat forest area. The paramount vision is to develop the social, educational, cultural status of the local tribes and other BPL farmers and to bring them to the main stream of life.
