The main objective of the project is connected with the focal area ?Biodiversity? and directed on conservation and rehabilitation of forest ecosystem in the administrative districts of Lugansk region by developing ecological network on regional level. Ecological network is a territorial system established to improve conditions for setting up and renovation of the environment; enhancement of natural resource potential of Ukraine; preservation of landscape and biodiversity, places of habitation and growth of rare animals and plants. This can be done through joining of nature reserve areas and facilities with other areas, which are particularly valuable for protection of environment.
The project is going to achieve its objective by implementation of the following activities: - conduct comprehensive assessment of the territory, its economic use of natural resources and the biological and landscape diversity of engineering and transport infrastructure, communications, and other features of the area; - conduct evidence-based research which will allow to select elements of the ecological network in the region; - draft a scheme for ecological network of districts in Lugansk region, taking into account the socio-economic and natural development of the region, based on the principles of information on natural landscapes, vegetation, places of distribution of rare and endangered species of flora, fauna, plant communities and populations of species listed the Green and the Red Book of Ukraine, the types of habitats and other environmental objects.
