The project established and promoted the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through improvement of legislative and methodological components. It focused on the local level, namely, on two pilot areas ? Chernihiv and Zhytomyr regions of Ukraine.
The project team prepared the concept of the Strategy for Environmental Education for Sustainable Development and the National Action Plan which were approved by the government. Also, the representative of ?Ecology of Ukraine? Charity Organization and the GEF SGP coordinator joined the Working Group on ESD.
It is significant that the project managed to establish the Partnership Network ?Education for Sustainable Development? for the first time in Ukraine. 35 organizations, including 25 NGOs joined the Network. In order to support information activities within the project, the first Ukrainian website dedicated to ESD was set up.
The team also enhanced awareness on ESD of teachers and schoolchildren and facilitated the national initiative ?Green Class?, participated in the Day of Knowledge in Kyiv and conducted a seminar and eco-forum. This component also included development of the guide ?Education for Sustainable Development in Questions and Answers? and a collection of ecological programmes for schoolchildren Due to the project implementation Ukraine was represented in the UNECE Committee ?Education for Sustainable Development? in Geneva. The team also highlighted details and results of the initiative through round table discussions and the exhibition during the International Environmental Forum ?Environment 2014?. Overall, more than 2000 people got to know about the project and the concept of Education for Sustainable Development.
