Dardanelles Coral Reef Protection
Dardanelles Coral Reef Protection
Corals have been one of the most studied research subject in recent years. There has been an important effect of corals around its living habitats on biological adaptations (feeding, sheltering, breeding) of marine life. These species living around the coastal ecosystems of different countries are faced with the problem such as global warming. Because of the sea temperature variations around the coral habitats cause to be lost such these areas having rich biodiversity. For preventing this problem and vititating the probable negative effects on communities, coral habitats have been put under protection in many countries and there have been doing scientific studies on their ecology, biology and transplantation with the intent of satisfying the imperfect knowledge. There are some coral assemblages having great importance in the Mediterranean, straits, Aegean and Marmara Sea. In spite of the ecological diversity there are still no record about the spesific scientific researches. This situation leads to a lack of ecological knowledge and hence taking the living areas under preservation and ensuring the sustainability become difficult. In this study, promotion, preservation and ensuring sustainability of the coral colonies forming large assemblages in the Dardanelles are aimed. The anchors thrown recklessly by some uneducated fishermen are fallen over the coral individuals and lead to death of them by breaking. This situation, rather than pollution, quicken the extinction of such an important habitat which is globally under protection and also living around our coastal waters as well. It was observed in some scientific researches that the loss ratio was higher than normal.

The current project focuses on a valuable marine community having a rich diversity around our area. For that purpose, the loss of a natural habitat which are not conserved yet will be determined, the benefit of this species to associated area is about to be discussed and it is supposed to contribute the sustainability of coral area with awareness raising of fishermen, locals and some other academics who are disposed to study on this subject by encouraging. Since the present study about the suspension of damaging materials on this species are about to carry out for the first time in the Turkish coasts, it is estimated that this research will support the likely investigations in the future on Anthozoans living in Saroz, Ayval?k and the other coastal areas and the obtained data will be used as a valuable reference guide.
