"Project for the restoration of the ecological functions and environmental services of Nuimi National Park".

The overall objective of the project is to restore the ecological functions and environmental services of Nuimi National Park (NNP) to its former state in terms of providing environmental and ecological support services. NNP is a wetland of importance to both The Gambia and neighboring Senegal and is a part of the Africa-Euro Asian flyway which plays a significant role in biodiversity conservation. The region NNP has been designated a protected area in 1986 by the Government of The Gambia and has since been managed according to a management plan implemented between The Department of Parks and Wildlife and the local communities of the area. Illegal activities including encroachment have take a negative toll on te state of NNP and this project will attempt to reverse that trend by putting on the ground measures designed to restore and protect the park. The involvement of the communities living around the park will form a central component of this project.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

As the major resources users and exploiters of the park resources, women have been targeted in this project. There will be 2 major garden schemes in 2 villages (Mbankam an Kanuma)

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Public sensitization campains in the communities living around the national park will be conducted to promote awarenes on the global environment

Capacity - Building Component

The capacities of the comunities and selected schools in the area will be enhanced through this project. In the schools, the environmental education will be incorporated and the environmental clubs in the schools will be supported.

Notable Community Participation

The project will engage drectly all the communities living around tyhe national park during its implementation. A management commiteee of the park composed of representatives of the park perimeter communities is aready in place and will be engaged in project execution.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will have a major component geared towards promotimg sustainable livelihoods. This will incclude promoting eco-tourism development within the park by the construction/improvement of park facilities, provision of boats for eco-tourism trips in the park to be owned and managed by the communities, promoting aquaculture within the park etc.

Project Results
? Forty (40) hectares of degraded mangrove areas were rehabilitated through the planting of about 200, 000 mangrove seedlings within the park to improve habitats for the different biodiversity species including migratory birds, conserve biodiversity, restore wetland functions and enhance the livelihoods of the communities.

? More than 20, 000 different indigenous tree species were planted in degraded parts of the park especially on the two islands of Jinack Kajata and Jatako to address land and coastal degradation.

? Greater awareness was created among the local communities who have now shown more ownership in the management and protection of the national park. Also enhanced community park surveillance by procuring trail bikes

? 5 schools and more than 300 students benefitted from the Conservation and Environmental Education programmes with an emphasis on sound environment management and climate change issues highlighting the important roles of the communities in the initiatives.

? 30 people drawn from the surrounding park communities received training on mangrove nursery management and actively participated in the mangrove planting exercises.

? 3 aquaculture ponds were constructed within the barren salt-affected areas of the park to improve the income status of the local park communities and demonstrated alternative uses of land otherwise considered unfit for other agricultural purposes.

? 2 vegetable gardens were established for the women from 2 of the park communities to enhance their income status and to provide them with alternative sources of income.

? A Visitor?s Centre was established to provide vital information to visitors and the general public on biodiversity and office space for park staff.

? 2 boats were purchased and handed over to the park communities aimed at promoting ecotourism and providing alternative sources of income for both the park and youth of the park communities.

? 2 photo hides and 1 observation tower were constructed in strategic locations of the park also aimed at promoting ecotourism and providing vital sources of funding for park activities.
