Promotion of sustainable coffee production practices for livelihoods improvement
Effects of climate change and unsustainable agricultural practices have brought about a huge bearing on coffee productivity. Suitable land for coffee production is gradually becoming marginal. Rising global temperature, sporadic rainfall pattern and high incidences of pest and diseases are the major causes for worry. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has also caused soil and water pollutions.
Coffee industry is poised to collapse if adaptive environmental management measures are not carefully and timely employed. Poor coffee yields are also realized because of lack of accessibility to affordable farm inputs.
Farmers who are at risk are those living in mountainous areas where possibilities of growing other crops are almost zero. Absence of deliberate economic incentives for these farmers act as a catalyst for unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. This has a potential to aggravate the current situation into a serious environmental problems which pose adverse effects on coffee production.
Objectives:
-To promote sustainable coffee production
-To promote environmental friendly primary processing of coffee-To promote production of honey and other farm enterprise by coffee farmers
-To build capacity of farmers
