Mitigating the Effects of Flood Disaster Incidence in Addah Williams Polo, Bundu-Ama, Port Harcourt LGA, Rivers State, Nigeria
AddahWilliamsPolo is an urban slum community facing flood disaster during raining season and risk to the health of the dwellers as a result of lack of drainage system and capacity to overcome the risk. . This is due to the effects of climate change that had increased the sea level water rise resulting to over flow causing flooding and land degradation of the community. The resultant effects include salinity and contamination of borehole water, increased malaria and dengue fever, etc. The project activities are consultative meetings with stakeholders/town hall meeting, identification and delineation of drainage paths in the community, purchase of construction materials ? sand, cements, chippings, rods, etc; digging of drainage paths, iron bending works , training and advocacy visits, construction of drainage system , Monitoring and Evaluation. The formation of drainage/sanitation committee and regular monthly sanitation exercise will also mitigate the effects of flooding in the community and it will be done by all stakeholders in the community and the NGO. This will enhance the community outlook, improve the sanitary condition of the community and overcome negative impacts on both health and environmental condition and the training which will be on WASH, personal hygiene and sanitation will build the capacity of the community dwellers. This project will result to Construction of one central 400m long, 0.15m wide and 0.2m deep drainage system, formation of drainage and Sanitation committee to ensure regular clean up of the grain, 30% annual decreased in health related cases, 20% annual improved in sanitary condition of the community and 30% annual knowledgeable community people on environmental and health sustainability
