Protection of Black-faced Spoonbill (BFS) Breeding Habitat and Birds in Zhuanghe, Dalian
The project sites: Yuanbao Island and Xingrentuo Island in Zhuanghe, Dalian is one of the only two breeding grounds for black-faced spoonbill (BFS) currently found in the world. BFS is the second species that has been endangered bird,(following Crested Ibis in China) in the Red List of Threatened Species by International Union for Conservation of Natural Resources (IUCN) and International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP) in 1989. China Red Data Book of Endangered Animals Rating: endangered, entry into force: 1996.
The project will raise public awareness to protect the habitat of BFS and other birds in the two islands.
Main Problems:
1.Tourism development has caused human disturbance to Black-faced Spoonbill?s habitat, especially during the breeding season.
2.The vegetation for BFS breeding is limited and needs to be improved.
3.There is lacking of timely rescue for injured birds.
4. Local fishermen, villagers and tourists lack of awareness to protect the BFS and other bird.
Solutions/activities:
1. Baseline survey and training for community members.
2. Control the quantity of tourists visiting the island and regulate the behaviors of tourists during the non-breeding season.
3.Restore and protect the BFS habitat on Yuanbao Island and Xingrentuo Island by planting shrubs and trees, constructing two freshwater pools and waste transfer facility.
4. Establish two rescue centers for injured BFS and other birds.
5. Outreach and public awareness raising on BFS protection.
Anticipate results/outcomes:
1.95 ha. of territory is under protected.
2. 30 BFS and other birds protected.
3. 100% injured birds rescued.
4. 2000 people's awareness on BFS and birds protection enhanced.
