Up-scaling the Toloma Women in Action Processing Plant for Increased Production to Meet Market Requirements Utilizing Renewable Energy and Best Practice s to Reduce Negative Impacts on Biodiversity
The Toloma Women in Action is requesting some funding to enable the factory to be fully operational. And adhering to the measures guided by the Dominica Bureau of Standards. This includes equipment for grinding and packaging and labeling. At present all the work is still being done manually and this is labour intensive and time consuming. Also the required hygienic conditions and quality control must be attained to meet the growing market requirements. The group is also seeking funding to be able to construct a water tank and pipe water to the facility. (The waste from the processing of Toloma is toxic and a large volume of water has to be used.) Since the plant is right next to a stream, there is need to construct a treatment soak away for the processing waste, so that it can be filtered slowly away from the stream as we seek to preserve the biodiversity therein. The processing of Toloma requires dying and as has been traditionally done we want to continue using solar for drying. A solar dyer will be required and will be constructed adjacent to the factory.
The objectives of the project are to increase production volume, to improve on quality to adhere to market standards, to operate in the best environmentally friendly manner to preserve the integrity of our environment by reducing pollution of steams and utilizing solar energy to increase the capacity and skill set of the members.
? To create employment opportunities in the community
? To increase revenue for the organisation and the community producers through increased sales
? For tourist attraction
? Purchase and installation of processing equipment and appliances
? Training in operating and maintain the access of equipment and new processing techniques
? Training in business management and production management
? Construction of water tank and piping of water to tank
? Construction of processing waste treatment soak away system
? Construction of solar dryer shed and drop shed for washing
? Re- furnishing of the building
