Demonstration Project on Off-grid Zero Carbon Lighting and other Application at Farming and Pastoral Communities in Zhuoni County, Gansu Province
Demonstration Project on Off-grid Zero Carbon Lighting and other Application at Farming and Pastoral Communities in Zhuoni County, Gansu Province
There are a total of 2010 households of farmers and herdsmen in project site. The main population is Tibetans, which accounts for 70% to 90%. The annual per capita income is $377. There is no lighting in 90% of local roads, public areas of schools and family compounds.
80% of pastoral residents live far away from each other and have no access to electricity. Fifty percent of population in half farming-half pastoral region has no access to electricity. One to two percent of local families use small diesel generators as the daily energy source and the energy source for small restaurants and stores, which costs a lot of money and cause a lot of pollution.
The project will demonstrate and promote lighting and electricity supply at the targeted farming and pastoral communities.

Main problems:
1) The project sites are suffering lack of electricity, which is hindering the development and the improvement of livelihoods. Developing Hydropower will cause impacts on the local ecology. Developing coal-fired power generation will cause negative effects on climate change mitigation.
2)It has a high-cost of setting up a special electricity distribution line for the residents who live far from each other.

Solutions/activities:
1)Demonstrate LED solar street lamps lighting in local public area and install 96 LED street lamps.
2) Provide 135 sets of portable LED lamps for local farmers and herdsmen and demonstrate the mode of electricity supply for off grid lighting at farming and pastoral communities.
3) Provide 3 sets of small solar LED power supply systems for local schools and local health centers.
4) Train local farmers and herdsmen on how to use portable LED lamps and small solar system installation.
5) Provide trainings on climate change for the local farmers and herdsmen.
6) Summarize the modes of electricity supply for off grid lighting at farming and pastoral communities and share with government and other stakeholders.

Anticipated results/outcomes:
1) 147 tons of CO2 reduced per year at project sites
2) locals' income increased $16393 in total at project site
3) 100 households trained and can use portable LED lamps and small solar system
4) 400 people know climate change issue
5) Complete a report on "zero-carbon" lighting sustainable mode at farming and pastoral communities and submit this report to policy makers
