Biodiversity and ecosystem conservation and climate change adaptation for sustainable livelihoods
Biodiversity and ecosystem conservation and climate change adaptation for sustainable livelihoods
Brief description of project
The broad objectives are; to
1. Ensure protection and sustainable management of land and its vegetation cover thereby improving the conservation and protection of our bio-diversity and ecosystems to mitigate climate change driving factors.
2. Increase and build capacities of local communities and institutions to access relevant information for sound decision making and thus empowering them to be self-reliant.
3. Enhance the income generation capacities of local communities and individuals through sustainable natural resource utilization, with the ultimate objectives of enhancing their livelihoods and conserve bio-diversity and ecosystems
The specific objectives of the project are:
1. Restoration of mangroves for conservation of bio-diversity and ecosystems to mitigate climate change risks and impacts on sea level rise, fisheries, bio-diversity and water resources.
2. Reforestation of degraded and open lands to reverse and mitigate loss of vegetation cover, bio-diversity and wildlife and to reduce erosion, water flow and evaporation.
3. Protection and preservation of indigenous threaten tree species through seed collection, preservation and seedling production.
4. Bush fire control and management for mitigating climate change risks such as abating carbon dioxide emission, its impact on rangeland and livestock and pollution to air and waters.
5. Sustainable forest resource utilization through promotion of energy saving devices to cut the current trend of fuel wood exploitation and charcoal production.
6. Continue to create awareness on biodiversity, ecosystems and climate change driving factors and its effects on lives.
Promote sustainable natural resource utilization for income generation, food security and bio security.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
A considerable portion of this project is geared towards capacity building in the community. 40 individuals from 5 communities and 60 farmers from 8 communities received training on conservation concepts to enhance awareness on the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. 50 farmers trained on bushfire management concepts aimed at addressing attitudes to bush fire and sharing information on best practices of prevention and control. Laws and regulations of bush fire were highlighted. Bushfire management plans and strategies for successful implementation put in place. 40 women trained on seedling production and 50 more trained on indigenous seed collection techniques and preservation, the objective being to build capacity in identifying scare and near extinct tree species. To address the stress on the forest resources and to reduce labor and same time, 40 women were trained to build capacity on energy saving technology.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
A major objective of this project is to enhance income generating capacity of local community members through sustainable natural resource utilization with the ultimate goal of improving their livelihood. to achieve this objective, 40 women from 6 communities are trained on pottery making. They are expected to transfer the knowledge to other members of their community . The acquired skills will improve the quality of pottery products, the sales of which are anticipated to be e reliable source of income. Additionally, to improve income generating potentials, these women were trained on marketing and enterprise development strategies.
