The broad objective of this project is for the enhancement in the production and revival of some indigenous trees for biodiversity conservation with eco-tourism development within the Abuko nature reserve in order to restore the biodiversity (fauna and flora) for conservation and environmental protection.
Abuko nature reserve is one of the first designated wildlife reserves in The Gambia in 1916. This project is expected to produce 20 different indigenous tree species targeting 30,000 plants to be planted in the degraded sixty nine (69) ha area within the Abuko nature reserve .This project also aims to make a follow-up on the planting of 16,000 Gmelina and Cashew seedlings on the periphery of the nature reserve in 2013. The production of the said indigenous trees will be done at the Sarro tree central nursery. The trees that are to be produced will be managed through a participatory management team whose composition will be some staff of the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management, Sarro tree nursery and GEF-SGP representative.
