Protection and provision of watering facility at woodlots established at Perai

The propose project intends to protect and provide access to water at the 600 meters square of woodlots at Perai Tenda Village Tumana District. The said area was provided by the community and over a total of 1,020 different tree species (including fruits and valuable trees) was planted. The establishment of the woodlots is meant to conserve the environment and promote the idea of tree planting among local community groups/kafo. The project will thus alleviate the difficulties of seedlings for planting in the area during the tree planting season.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

One major objective of this project is to build local capacity in tree management and forest protection. This is done in collaboration with the regional forestry office in the area ,who provided the necessarily expertise.

Project sustainability

The beneficiary community has shown a good sense of ownership and this is anticipated to serve as a vehicle for sustainability. A management committee is set up and task with monitoring and regular maintenance post project implementation. The implementing NGO is an established one with lot of goodwill in the community and has pledged to continue monitoring activities post implementation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The implementing organization has been involved in development work in the area geared towards promoting livelihood activities. The trees planted under this project are anticipated to be a source of nutrition as well as income for the people. A vegetable garden is also incorporated in the woodlot and is expected to serve as a steady source of income particularly for the women.

Notable Community Participation

This project is initiated by the local community. Its objective is to protect and provide water for a 600m sq community woodlot with over 1,020 tree species. It uses a participatory bottom-up approach to maximize grass root participation. The community aims to take ownership of the management of their forest resources. The unskilled and some skilled labor needed for the implementation of this project is provided by ta local youth group in partnership with another youth group from a neighboring community that has experience in tree management.

Gender Focus

both men and women were involved in planning and implementing phases of the project. To specifically benefit the women, an area of the woodlot is demarcated for vegetable gardening by the community women.

Project Results

- The project was officially launched in the village of Perai by the Regional Governor and local government authority members during which the materials for the fencing of the woodlot and nursery were officially handed over to the village development Committee.

-Two community sensitization and mobilization meetings held in the village to discuss about the project, its objective and outcome and lay out and agree on the roles and responsibilities of all the stakeholders involved.

- 2 wells are completed to provide water for the seedlings and for dry season vegetable production by the women of the village.An agreement reached with the village women to use the space between the young trees for vegetable farming and each woman is allocated a few plants to water daily until such a period when the trees mature. At that stage, the women would have to move out to a new site.

- Fencing of the woodlot which includes a nursery within has been completed. The nursery would be used to raise seedlings to meet the grantee's annual seedling requirements.

- At the conclusion of the project, a participator evaluation exercise lasting for 3 days was conducted from 18 - 20 September 2014 at Peri Tenda village. using the community-based performance monitoring score card methodology, the exercise determined the satisfaction level of the beneficiaries using 3 standard indicators extracted by the team and 3 generated indicators. two different focus groups were formed consisting of 6 males and 4 females who scored on the level of satisfaction with regards to the project goal and objectives, best practices learnt and suggestions for improvements. On the standard indicators, the groups scored 100% satisfaction while on the generated indicators, the groups scored over 89%.
